Living Up To Our Ideals?

To the Editor:

I am writing about the racial slur being directed at a Newtown student. (The Newtown Bee, June 4, 2021, “It Is Never Okay”) I suppose I should not have been surprised as intolerance is abundant in our country, and yes, even in our own town. It was perhaps the insensitive act of a young person who didn’t realize the consequences of this behavior. Or possibly it may have been something that student learned at home. In either case, the teacher is right that “It is never okay.”

I was particularly saddened by this incident because I know the student who was the target of the slur. He is one of the brightest and most engaged young persons I have ever met. His reactions and that of the teacher are to be commended. The fact that a discussion was held in the classroom was most appropriate. I hope that the message made an impact on all the students. I also hope that these discussions are being held in the school system on a regular basis, whether provoked by an incident or not.

The fact that local advocacy organizations are addressing this issue and that the press is giving “ink” to gatherings and incidences such as this gives me hope that things are changing. For too many years this kind of behavior went unnoticed.

Nevertheless, unthinking and unkind words can have a powerful and lasting effect on young people. Around town I see signage and hear phrases like “Be Kind” and “Better in Newtown.” Are we living up to those ideals?
