Newtown resident Jodi Bialik invites the public to join her at Your Healthy Pet, 224 South Main Street, on Saturday, June 26, for a Great Pyrenees Rescue adoption event, from 11 am to 2 pm. Itâs a chance to learn about the Great Pyrenees dogs, and Jodi and her family can vouch for how wonderful this giant, furry breed of dog can be â they have a rescue Pyrenees, Morgan. For more information visit nationalpyr.org or contact Jodi at jodibialik@gmail.com.
Whether you were one of those who packed the house last month or one of the unfortunates who missed it, the May 22 presentation of The Flagpole Radio Café will be by broadcast this weekend on Charter Communications Channel 21. This was the 2009-10 season finale, which featured Peter Yarrow (and our local songster, Francine Wheeler of The Dream Jam Band!). The airing on the local access cable channel will be Sunday, June 20, at 8 pm. Iâll be glued to the screen.
Ginny Chion would like to let everyone know that she, along with fellow chairmen of the 2010 Newtown Light The Night Walk â Newtownâs first fully hosted event â met with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society staff members and Ken Good from Newtown Youth Academy on June 9 to discuss the upcoming Newtown Light the Night Walk, and they have a big update to announce: The walk will be held on Saturday, September 25, at Newtown Youth Academy. âLast year we held a Mini Walk Celebration at Newtown High School on a very rainy, windy evening,â Ginny reminded me. âThankfully, the weather did not stop the event. The gym saw over 300 walkers go around in circles and we raised over $31,000! We are hoping to have a rain-free event this year.â Sure it seems early, but you know how fast time goes when youâre planning for a big event. Teams can start forming, and organizers can start, well, organizing. To find out how to join the family event, visit LightTheNight.org/register or contact Colette Ercole at CErole@aol.com or Ginny at vchion@sbcglobal.net.
Meanwhile, a Family Fun Night/Light The Night Walk Kickoff event will be hosted by Newtown Youth Academy on Friday, June 25, to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event will run from 4 to 8 pm and will include The Family Fun Zone complete with use of NYAâs All Purpose Room, a moon bounce, kidsâ obstacle course, volleyball, soccer, a special toddlers zone, and a Light the Night Information Table where you can register to walk or just learn more about the walks and LLS patient service programs. The event will also include a Balloon Pop Gift Auction, where a $5 donation will give you one balloon to pop, with a prize inside every balloon. The Newtown Deli Snack Shop has also promised that 10 percent of its profits during these hours will also benefit the Light The Night Newtown Walk. NYA is at 4 Primrose Street, within Fairfield Hills. Call LuAnn Leclerc at 203-665-1415 for details about this event.
Summer officially begins this coming Monday, June 21, so get out your swim trunks and dive in, if you havenât yet. Newtownâs public swimming spots are open and fully staffed with certified lifeguards on duty. If you want to visit Treadwell Park pool or Eichlerâs Cove for a quick dip, make sure you visit the Parks & Rec department at Town Hall South to get a pass â daily or seasonal â or visit newtown-ct.gov to get a pass online. What says âsummerâ more loudly than a sunny day at the pool or waterside?
Keep those books, CDs, and DVDs coming! The Friends of the C.H. Booth Library welcome donations for the annual book sale right up to the day it starts. That would be Saturday, July 10, this year, at Reed Intermediate School. If you have a particularly large and unwieldy pile of books to donate, call the library at 203-426-4533 and they will put you in touch with someone to lend a helping hand. Other donations can be left on the cart parked near the childrenâs department, anytime that the library is open.
Congratulations to the Newtown Middle School eighth grade students who took part in the Monday evening, June 14, Moving Up Ceremony at WestConnâs OâNeill Center. Look out, NHS! Here comes the new crop of freshmen! (And I donât doubt that this yearâs seniors are leaving plenty of memorabilia in the lockers that the Class of 2014 will inheritâ¦. It seems to be a tradition.)
While we patiently wait for Newtownâs Organic Farmersâ Market to find a home this summer, remember to support the other area farmersâ markets for the freshest in local produce and beautiful handcrafted items. Monroeâs Farmersâ Market is held Fridays, starting June 25, on the Monroe Town Green, from 3 to 6 pm. Information is at www.MonroeFarmersMarket.org. A little further out is the Georgetown Farmersâ Market, Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, at 4 Old Mill Road. Visit www.GeorgetownCTFarmersMarket.com for more information on that down-county market. In Westport, you can find a farmersâ market in action in the Imperial Avenue parking lot, Thursdays, from 10 am to 2 pm. The website www.WestportFarmersMarket.com will tell you all you need to know. For a complete listing of Fairfield County farmersâ markets, go to VisitConnecticut.com.
Newtown High Schoolâs Alumni Softball Game will be held Wednesday, June 23, at 7 pm, at Treadwell Park. Former players are asked to go to the field at 6:30 pm to prepare for a scrimmage against this yearâs team. I hope the alumni are feeling frisky, because this yearâs NHS softball team has had a primo season!
They havenât exactly been knitting little booties (or maybe they have), but everyone in the Newtown Tax Collectorâs office is bursting with pride over the birth of little Lia Spremullo, June 11. Lia is the daughter, and first child, of Cayenne Spremullo, a clerk in the tax office, and her husband, Jonathan. Congratulations to the entire family, and to the extended family in the Tax Collectorâs office.
Iâll be giving birth next week â to a new column, that is. I hope youâll be around to⦠Read me again.
