After working as an interim and then part-time athletic trainer (AT) at Newtown High School this past school year, Doug Michlovitz has been appointed the full-time role beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

Michlovitz, who resides in Sandy Hook, is excited about taking on the role.

“I’ve loved every minute. The coaches, parents, [Athletic Director Matt Memoli], school administration, and student-athletes have all been absolutely amazing,” Michlovitz said.

Michlovitz, a physical education teacher for Hawley School students, will have a reduced teaching role to get to the high school in the early afternoon for his AT duties.

“I kind of get the best of both worlds because I can keep my hand in teaching and also work as athletic trainer,” Michlovitz said.

The new AT has plenty of experience working with these students, having taught many of them since their elementary school days.

John Juniet, who was interim AT in the winter and spring, stays onboard in a part-time role this coming fall. Juniet will also serve as strength and conditioning coach. Juniet will be on hand in the training room as well as out at events when needed, especially when Newtown has multiple events at different locations. At times, there are games at Blue & Gold Stadium as well as off campus, at Treadwell Park, for example.

“I want to thank John for the great job he did with the Newtown student-athletes this past year. He’s an outstanding athletic trainer and I’m really looking forward to working with him again next year,” said Michlovitz, adding that it should be a seamless transition.

“What struck me initially was just how well they work together as far as treating athletes, their communication, how diligent they are when athletes get injured, getting on the same page with coaches, parents, and nurses,” Memoli said.

“Our goal is to make sure everything is covered and we always have a certified athletic trainer on-site,” Memoli said.
