Restricted Turn

Newtown Police report Michelle Dicandido, 59, of New Milford, operating a 2019 Kia Sorento, was stopped on South Main Street in the northbound lane at 3:18 pm June 5. Amena Johnson, 58, of Newtown, operating a 2007 GMC Yukon, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. DiCandido attempted to turn left onto Country Club Road and struck Johnson's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

DiCandido was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Michael Pertoso, 27, of Shelton, operating a 2008 Honda Odyssey, was driving northbound on Berkshire Road at 7:24 am June 8. He was traveling behind a 2019 Hyundai Tucson operated by Teprh Elamin, 23, of West Haven. Elamin stopped due to traffic ahead stopped at a traffic light, and Pertoso stopped behind. Elamin moved forward a bit as traffic moved, and was rear-ended by Pertoso.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Pertoso was issued an infraction for following too close.

Collision In Intersection

Newtown Police report Richard Clifford, 81, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Subaru Outback, was stopped in traffic at the stop sign at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Main Street at 3:51 pm June 8. William Huegi, of Newtown, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Clifford attempted to cross into the north and south travel lanes, striking Huegi's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Clifford was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Collision At Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Regina Palmieri, 68, of Naugatuck, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 9:13 am June 11. Jack Bouma, 76, of New Milford, operating a Ford F150, was traveling southbound on Main Street. Palmieri entered the intersection and struck Bouma's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Palmieri's vehicle was towed.

Palmieri was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.

Forgery, Larceny Charges

Newtown Police report that on June 13, members of Newtown Police Department traveled to Rikers Island Prison to take Jon Wesley Raynor, 54, of North Chesterfield, Va. into custody on an active arrest warrant.

The charges were in connection with an incident from September 2023.

Raynor was transported from Rikers Island to Newtown Police Department, where he was processed and charged with criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, and two counts of first-degree forgery.

Raynor was released from police custody on a $10,000 bond and assigned a court date of June 26 in Danbury Superior Court.

Crossed Centerline

Newtown Police report Bryce Bachyrycz, 53, of Lyman, Me., operating a 2021 Subaru Forester, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road at 7:11 pm June 13. Michael Maddox, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling northbound on Berkshire Road. Bachyrycz crossed the centerline as he crested a hear, and side-swiped Maddox's vehicle. Bachyrycz's vehicle continued southbound off the northbound travel lane shoulder, where it struck some rocks. Maddox continued northbound and left the roadway off the northbound travel lane shoulder, where the vehicle struck a sign and then a rock formation.

Bachyrycz was evaluated on scene and declined further treatment. Maddox was evaluated on scene and transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed.

Bachyrycz was issued an infraction for failure to maintain lane.

Risk Of Injury To Child Charge

Newtown Police report that a patrol officer performed a motor vehicle stop on South Main Street for a motor vehicle offense at 10:30 am June 15. After a brief investigation, Jeremy Ashe, 40, of New Haven, was arrested on the charges of operating an unregistered motor vehicle, violation of keeping a child less than two or 30 pounds in a rear-facing child seat, improper use of marker plates, theft of plates, illegal operation without minimum insurance, possession of five to eight ounces of cannabis, and risk of injury to a child.

Ashe was released on a $4,000 bond with a court date of June 25 in Danbury Superior Court.

Both Drivers Receive Warnings

Newtown Police report Kaitlyn Hartigan, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2024 Ford Bronco, was traveling southbound on Palestine Road at 6:08 pm June 15. Thomas Schulz, 39, of Newtown, operating a 2025 Audi Q7, was traveling northbound on Palestine Road. The vehicles collided on a curved section of road, with Hartigan's vehicle spinning and coming to rest in the norhtbound lane. Schulz's vehicle continued 200 feet beyond point of impact before coming to a stop.

Hartigan was evaluated on scene but declined transport. Both vehicles were towed.

Both vehicles were ruled to have converged at the center of the roadway and both were issued written warnings for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Left Driveway, Hit Car

Newtown Police report Christopher Hoyt, 39, of Monroe, operating a 2008 Nissan UD2600 box truck, was in a driveway on Berkshire Road at 12:45 pm on June 17, attempting to make a left hand turn onto the roadway. Marcos Cambisaca-Ordonez, 47, of Danbury, operating a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road. Hoyt pulled out and was struck by Cambisaca-Ordonez's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Hoyt was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way while entering the roadway.

Jeep Hits Subaru

Newtown Police report Marilyn Rennagel, 83, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling northbound on Currituck Road at 2:41 pm June 17. Kelvin Chabla, 38, of New Milford, operating a 2008 Subaru Outback, was traveling eastbound on Hawleyville Road. Rennagel stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with Hawleyville Road and then began her turn and was struck by Chabla's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Chabla's vehicle was towed.

Rennagel was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.

DUI Charge

Newtown Police report that on June 19, officers were dispatched to South Main Street for the report of an erratic vehicle traveling southbound. Officers located the vehicle on Bryan Lane, where they conducted a traffic stop. De Shaun Taylor, 31, of Danbury, was arrested and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Taylor was released on a $1,000 surety bond with a court date of July 2.

Rear Ended On Riverside

Newtown Police report Theresa Archer, 88, of Danbury, operating a 2015 Honda Accord, was traveling westbound on Riverside Road at 12:39 pm June 21. Barbara Szarmach, 50, of Monroe, operating a 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLK250, was traveling westbound on Riverside Road ahead of Archer. Approaching the intersection with Glen Road, Szarmach stopped for traffic ahead stopped at a red light. Archer struck Szarmach from behind.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Archer was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Collision On Taunton Hill

Newtown Police report John Kealy, 76, of Newtown, operating a 2025 Subaru Forester, was traveling northbound on Saw Mill Road at 3:05 pm June 21. Cecil Previdi, 18, of Newtown, operating a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling eastbound on Taunton Hill Road. Kealy stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Taunton Hill Road and made a left hand turn, where he struck Previdi's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Kealy was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.

Assault, Reckless Driving Charges

Newtown Police report that on June 21, officers responded to Plaza South for the report of an assault for which the suspect had fled the scene. Upon arrival, officers began a criminal investigation and identified the suspect as Gabriel De Almeida Paiva, 25, of Waterbury. Paiva was later located on Route 8 in Naugatuck, where he had crashed the vehicle he had fled in. Paiva was taken into custody and charged with third-degree assault, breach of peace, and reckless driving.

Paiva was released on a $10,000 bond and given a court date of June 22 in Danbury Superior Court.
