Herbert R. Schilke

Herbert R. Schilke, 71, husband of the late Josephine (Frizzell) Schilke of Brevard, N.C., formerly of Toddy Hill Road, Newtown, died June 21 in Brevard.

Mr Schilke was born July 20, 1930, in Bristol, a son of the last William and Ottille (Schroeder) Schilke. He was a lifelong resident before moving to North Carolina in 1998.

He was a graduate of Central Connecticut State College and taught Vocational Culinary Arts in Waterbury at Wilby and Crosby High Schools until retiring in 1994.

Mr Schilke served as sergeant in the US Army serving in Berlin, Germany. He was a life member of the NRA, and an honorary member of North Carolina Sheriffs Association. Mr Schilke was a longtime Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the Mohawk Council #28 Knights Masons, Hiram Lodge #18 AF and AM and Hiram Chapter #1 Royal Arch Masons of Sandy Hook. In 1997-98, he served as ME Grand High Priest in Connecticut.

He is survived by a half-brother, Arthur Schilke of Connecticut, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held June 29 in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Interment was in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Roxbury.
