Kaitlin Marsden banged out six hits and drove in six runs as the Newtown Hawks 14-and-under travel softball team prevailed in a slugfest, 28-13, over Ridgefield. For the 16-and-under team, Jenna Van Waalwijk rapped a run-scoring, walk-off single to lead the Hawks over Watertown while Amanda Schiffer fired a no-hitter to lead the Hawks past New Canaan.

TRAVEL

U16

Hawks 12, Wilton 3 – Mariale Renna pitched five innings of one-hit ball, striking out eight batters and leading the Hawks to their fourth win in a row. Amanda Schiffer pitched well in relief as Lisa Alberico (two walks, a stolen base and a single), Jaclyn Van Waalwijk (single and a walk) and Nicole Alberico (two singles) managed to reach base a total of seven times and scored seven of the Hawks’ 12 runs. Jenna Van Waalwijk and Renna each contributed with two RBIs. Sarah Greenfield banged out a hit and an RBI to round out the offense. Kate Kelleher and Annie Grills played solid defense for the Hawks.

Hawks 5, Watertown 4 – Jenna Van Waalwijk rapped a run-scoring, walk-off single to lead the Hawks past a powerful Watertown team. Kaity Herwig – who banged out two singles in the game – scoring the winning run. Ali Kirk powered the offense with three hits and an RBI that tied the game in the sixth. Annie Grills and Ali Legros also had key singles while Mariale Renna and Amanda Schiffer combined for the win with a total of 12 strikeouts.

Hawks 5, New Canaan 1 – Nicole Alberico collected two hits, a walk, and scored two runs to lead the Hawks past New Canaan. Amanda Schiffer fired a no-hitter, striking out seven. Rachel Nicolosi, Amanda Schiffer, Jenna Van Waalwijk, Ali Kirk and Kaity Herwig all contributed with singles to the offensive effort.

U14

Hawks 28, Ridgefield 13 – Kaitlin Marsden banged out six hits and drove in six runs as the Hawks out-slugged Ridgefield. Christine Beck and Paige Fleming had two hits and four runs scored apiece. Rachel Marcucilli sparked the defense behind the dish while Katie Kirrane – after a rough first inning – settled down and pitched well.

U12

Hawks 7, Brookfield 6 – Kate Bowen stole home and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to lift Newtown past Brookfield. Bowen pitched well against a strong Brookfield team, striking out 14 batters. Offensively, Amanda Nealy and Bowen doubled while Natalie Dunn ripped a single. Both Dunn and Nealy made fine defensive plays for Newtown.

Hawks 14, Ridgefield 6 – Stephanie Sanchez and Colleen Cunningham combined on a three-hitter, striking out 12 to lead the Hawks to the win. Catcher Rachael Ruiz had an outstanding day as she went 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in four runs and threw out two baserunners. Ashley Kuligowski ripped three hits while Cunningham smacked a double. Sarah Ferris doubled and singled while Paige Woodhouse singled to complete the offensive Hawk attack.

Hawks 2, Fairfield Lights 1 – Kelly Burton singled in Sarah Ferris in the fourth inning with what proved to be the winning run as the Hawks overcame the Fairfield Lights. Nicole Elias led off the frame with a free pass and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Dunn. Ferris singled and then scored on Burton’s single. On the rubber, Kate Bowen pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 12 batters. Catcher Ashley Kuligowski ripped a single and had a great game behind the plate as she made an excellent catch on a foul tip. Infielders Nicole Elias and Stephanie Sanchez played flawlessly while centerfielder Paige Woodhouse made a phenomenal catch in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win for the Hawks.

U10

Hawks 10, Ridgefield Rebels 6 – The Hawks improved to 3-1 and moved atop the standings in the Fairfield County Fastpitch Softball League with a convincing win over the Ridgefield Rebels. Colleen Durkin, Katelyn D’andrea and Jessica Jowdy hit well for the Hawks. Tara Dawley caught four solid innings in the heat as Ali Kennedy and Ashley Cirone ran well on the bases.

Hawks 5, Bethel 4 – Jessica Gibbons (game-saving pop fly) and Jessica Jowdy (in a key double play at third) turned in some stellar defensive plays to lead the Hawks to the win. Ashley Cirone and Emma Herring combined on the mound for the win. Madison Hauck and Erin Begg also played well in the field while Jackie Kissack was solid behind the plate.

Hawks 24, Wilton 8 – Colleen Durkin, Katelyn D’andrea, Kendall Svanda and Jackie Kissack each had great hits while Erin Begg and Emma Herring scored four runs each to lead Newtown to the explosive win. Madison Hauck, Stephanie Roman, Tara Dawley and Jessica Gibbons played well in the field and Ashley Cirone, pitched well, striking out the side to end the game.

Redding 7, Hawks 4 – Ali Kennedy, Taylor Brady, Maggie Kennedy and Jessica Gibbons rapped out hits but the Hawks fell to Redding. Emma Herring and Ashley Cirone pitched well while catcher Kendall Svanda, first baseman Erin Begg and shortstop Jessica Jowdy shined in the field.

IN-HOUSE

U12

Amanda Nealy went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and pitched two solid innings to lead Creative Mailing to a 10-3 win over Drug Center for the U12 National League championship.

Kate Bowen pitched four shutout innings, striking out 10 batters and helped her own cause with a double. Paige Woodhouse made a great catch at third and Jessica Fossum played well to seal the win for Creative Mailing, which reaching the championship game by virtue of an 18-7 win over Brookfield Dental.

For the Drug Center, Mary Alicea had two singles while Sarah Ferris and Taylor Dimirjion each ripped singles. Ferris played well defensively as she threw three girls out in one inning from third base. Jessica Lynch showed great sportsmanship leading the cheers from bench since she was unable to play due to the chicken pox. Stephanie Sanchez and Brittany Clarke combined on the mound for the Drug Center.

In Creative’s win over Brookfield Dental, Bowen went 3-for-3 at the plate with seven RBI as she smacked a homerun, triple and double. Devon Miles singled and tripled while Ashley Kuligowski, Megan Gibbons, Brittany Soucar and Marilyn LaCroce all collected singles. Shannon Barra and Kelsey VonDerLinn each scored two runs.

Bowen, Nealy and LaCroce combined on the mound for the win.

For Brookfield Dental, Sara Smith and Scarlett O’Sullivan ripped two hits each while Rachael Ruiz, and Megan Murphy each collected hits. Nicole Elias and Scarlett O’Sullivan combined on the mound for Brookfield Dental.
