The task seemed tough – win back-to-back games for the championship – but that’s what Newtown Limousine did last week, defeating Noyes-Ryder Capital Management twice in a row to capture the Newtown Babe Ruth 13/15 division title at the Newtown Middle School.

A couple of solid pitching efforts did the trick. In the final, an 8-2 win for Limo, Matt Mascolo and Brett LeBlanc combined for two triples and a double while Tory Deakin and JR Shine had clutch RBI singles. Greg Larnerd was solid at first base and John Tita turned in an outstanding pitching performance.

Noyes-Ryder had sent Newtown Limo into the loser’s bracket with a 10-4 win earlier in the division playoffs. David Bray had a pair of hits and two RBI for Noyes while Matt Kuruc and Kyle Markham each had a hit and an RBI. For Limo, Larnerd banged out three hits.

Noyes-Ryder also defeated Edwards Construction, 4-3, as Dash Jeffries went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Mike Coates doubled and drove in a run as Bray, Chris Marks, Evan Barreto and Brian Kuruc all scored. For Edwards, Chris Winters had a two-run single.

With the promise of an ice cream free-for-all at the end, Ferris Acres Creamery captured the Babe Ruth Baseball 10-year-old championship on Sunday at Sandy Hook Field with a 2-1 win over Onyx.

Ferris Acres had topped Onyx, 6-4, earlier in the playoffs and sent Onyx to the loser’s bracket – where it defeated two tough teams to reach the championship round and set up a much-anticipated rematch with Ferris Acres. Onyx needed to win twice, but Ferris took care of business right away.

With the score tied 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Sean Elliott of Ferris reached base on a two-out walk and was driven home on a single by Chris Erikson to stake Ferris to a 1-0 lead. But in the top of the sixth, Onyx got its leadoff man on base and eventually drove him home on a fielder’s choice to tie the score 1-1.

So in the bottom of the sixth, David Gerics led off with a perfect bunt and ultimately came in to score on a hard-hit grounder by Chris Devaney. It was a superb effort on both sides, with Chad Magoulas, Kevin LeBlanc and Joe Davis pitching six strong innings for Onyx and Ferris splitting the mound duties between Gerics, Devaney, Schmidt, Erikson and Elliott.

Ferris’ playoff run began with a 19-11 win over BASE Technologies. Patrick Milano had a career day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three triples and four RBIs. David Gerics (two doubles, triple), Chris Erikson (2-for-2, two runs), Chad Ferris (2-for-4, three runs) and Reid Schmidt (triple, double, four RBIs) added to the offensive explosion.

Chris Devaney and Gerics pitched three innings of shutout ball, which allowed Ferris to pull ahead late in the game.

Ben Stoller (two triples, two doubles), Wyatt Depuy (2-for-4) and Matt Spencer (2-for-3) hit well for BASE Tech.

Ferris then defeated Mastercard, 15-5, as Reid Schmidt went 3-for-4 with a homer, triple and five RBIs. Sean Elliott was 3-for-3 in the lead-off spot, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Gerics (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Seth Morris (double, two RBIs) were also strong at the plate.

Devaney and Gerics again contributed two scoreless inning of pitching and Robert Andreotta continued his exceptional catching performance behind the plate.

Jon Hull (2-for-3, RBI), Nick Gerbo (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Michael Allwein (2-for-2) led the Mastercard offense.

In the first meeting between Ferris and Onyx, Ferris squeaked out a 6-4 win in eight innings as Robert Andreotta executed a perfect safety squeeze to drive in Devaney with what proved to be the winning run and – along with a clutch double earlier – gave him three RBIs on the day. Devaney also singled and doubled and drove in two more runs, Chad Ferris went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Patrick Milano had a clutch single in the top of the eighth plating Devaney.

Sean Elliott was superb on the mound striking out six batters in two innings of work and Chris Erikson pitched a scoreless fifth. The deep Ferris bullpen proved pivotal in this extra inning affair, with Reid Schmidt pitching two pressure-packed innings of relief to earn the win.

Chad Magoulas led Onyx with two triples and a single while Joe Davis (two hits) and Austin Ekstrom (triple) chipped in key hits as well.
