Newtown Continuing Education has openings available in the following classes and camps. Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787 for further information or to express interest in a program.newtowncontinuinged.org.SMART Camp (Summer Music and Arts) - This year's SMART Camp runs in two sessions, both at Head O' Meadow Elementary School. The first session runs from July 5 to July 15, 8:30 am to 1 pm, $289. The second session runs from July 18 to July 29, 8:30 am until 1 pm, $319. The camp offers creative arts, theater, science and more with a staff of professional artists and teachers.Chess For the Beginner - For students exiting second to fifth grade, running from July 11 to July 15, from 8 am to 11 am, at Newtown High School, $100. The course is a combination of instruction and play intended to help the beginning player, who understands how the pieces move and has played only a few games of chess. The class is limited to 16 students.Chess For the Advanced - A course for students exiting fourth grade and up, running from July 18 to July 22, from 8 am to 11 am, at NHS, $120. The course is a combination of play and instruction with a focus on the thinking process in chess, learning to properly play the middle game and improving one's tactical ability. Students will compete in a formal tournament at the end of the session. Students must be beyond the beginner level. The class is limited to 16 students.Design It, Build It, Launch It - A course for students exiting fourth to seventh grade. The course will be offered in two sessions, both at Reed Intermediate School. The first session will run from July 5 to July 15, 8:30 am until 12:30 pm, $294. The second session will run July 18 to July 29, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, $325. The course will go over engineering concepts for students who enjoy science and are curious about how things work. Students will explore machines like catapults and trebuchets, building and testing them, and then fast forward to more modern inventions such as rockets and hydraulic machines. The class is limited to 12 students.Graphics Camp - A course for students exiting fifth to eighth grade, running in two sessions, both at NHS. The first session runs from July 5 to July 15, 9 am to noon, $264. The second session runs from July 18 to July 29, 9 am to noon, $289. Students will jump into the world of Adobe Illustrator, learning the basic functions and tools of the computer program. Students will learn to turn boring "selfies" into a work of art, learn about live trace, live pain, and the symbol sprayer. This is a beginner course.PSAT & SAT Review - NHS Continuing Education and Lentz & Lentz SAT Prep are offering a weekly eight-session, 24-hour professional PSAT & SAT prep program beginning Tuesday, July 5, at NHS. Classes run Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The comprehensive, three-hour per session, individualized program is geared to assist bright, average and underachieving students. The class time is split equally between English and math, covering all facets of the exam. Class dates are July 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, and 28.

The verbal part consists of essay writing, grammatical skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, contextual completions, speed-reading techniques, all applicable to the SAT. The mathematical part covers a myriad of problems, including arithmetical skills, advanced algebra, basic geometry, functions, exponents (including the famous "tip sheet") and modern mathematic concepts.
