Inspiration — By A Thread

By Larissa Lytwyn

Karen Meyer, art director of Threads magazine and former book illustrator, visited Lea Attanasio’s third grade class recently at Hawley School to share her experiences and knowledge about illustrating. Ms Meyer said she has loved drawing her whole life, and remembers spending lots of time sketching and coloring as early as kindergarten. The passion eventually led to a highly prosperous career.

“I spend lots of time looking, looking, looking,” she said. “While I’m drawing, I’m always looking at the small details.” She explained the need to balance what the writer and publisher wants with the reader’s expectations. The presentation was enlivened with slides, samples, and even an impromptu sketch of some of the students.

Having illustrated some of the popular sports books written by Matt Christopher, Ms Meyer was granted “star” status by the class. She even graciously agreed to sign autographs for the children. In conclusion, Ms Meyer encouraged the children to pursue their own personal interests, whatever they might by, stressing the importance of hard work and practice.
