Super Sitters Appreciate Super Volunteers

To the Editor:

I would like to publicly thank some special members of the Newtown Hook and Ladder Volunteer Fire Company.

Last year I was contacted by Assistant Chief Steve Murphy to offer his services for our Super Sitters Course. He offered to come and speak about fire safety to those future Newtown baby-sitters. Our course is offered five times a year and Chief Murphy made certain he arranged his schedule to accommodate our needs. He was wonderful! The course participants learned many important safety tips, which they could incorporate into their lives, both daily and when baby-sitting. Many times Chief Murphy came directly from his “real” job as a Westport firefighter to join us. Word spread that a guest speaker from the fire department would be at our fourth class and we were never disappointed. Our last Super Sitters class for the school year ended last week and Chief Murphy was scheduled once again. Unfortunately, he was detained in Westport. But, rather than not come at all, he called in reinforcements. Rich McCulloch and Tom Ramsdell took over at the last minute. The students peppered them with questions featuring different scenarios. Each one was answered very professionally.

I write this letter to add my voice to the numerous Newtown residents who already know the value of our volunteer fire departments. Thanks to Chief Murphy, Rich, and Tom, there were about 75 young people who are more knowledgeable about the importance of fire safety. The generosity of their time is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Roseanne G. Loring
