Summer Camps Offer

Smiles Across Newtown

A number of children climbed ladders, slipped down slides, and passed balls at Treadwell Park on Monday, July 2, as part of the Parks and Recreation Department’s summer day camp programs offered at both Dickinson and Treadwell Parks.

The day camp programs opened for this summer last week, and many more options for summer entertainment are offered through Newtown Parks and Recreation. A full listing of summer programs, along with more information about the day camps, are available at www.newtownct.gov. Brochures and information on all summer programs are also in the Parks & Rec office, 3 Main Street, 203-270-4340, and available on the website.

Newtown Continuing Education’s SMART (Summer Music and Arts) camp also kicked off its summer at Head O’ Meadow School on Monday. Different programs are offered through SMART. In the school’s cafetorium students practiced under the guidance of instructors Meagan Preis and Jane Ellen Anderson for the Theater and Performing Arts Workshop, and down the hallway students were molding clay in The Great Clay Adventure program, instructed by Don Koypscinski.

“I just really like playing with clay,” said Anna Culkin, a student taking the Great Clay Adventure program this summer.

Inside another room at Head O’ Meadow, Icky Sticky Chemistry instructor Jenn Hayducky said the students in her program were enjoying themselves while creating oobleck, a corn starch and water mix.

“They’re loving how messy they are getting,” said Ms Hayducky, as students dipped their hands in bowls filled with different colored oobleck.

More information about the SMART programs is available off of the school district’s website, www.newtown.k12.ct.us.
