Thirteen-year-old Sabrina Boccuzzi, a member of Girl Scout Troop 55005 in Newtown and a rising eighth grader at Newtown Middle School, will present three craft programs this summer at C.H. Booth Library, as part of the requirements to qualify for the Girl Scout Silver Award.

The Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, entails completing what is known as a “Cadette Journey,” comprising numerous steps to develop and put into action a community-based project that reflects a girl’s personal interest. The project requires at least 50 hours of work.

“I personally like the library,” said Sabrina, adding that she appreciated the many library programs she had participated in as a younger girl. “I asked [Young Adult Librarian Kim Weber] what I could do for this summer,” said Sabrina. She was told that the library was seeking to increase summer programs for ’tweens (young people between the approximate ages of 9 and 13), and was particularly in need of craft programs. She sees this programming as a way of “giving back” to the library and her community, while fulfilling her Silver Award requirements.

“We do a lot of crafts at home,” she said, and as a participant in the Newtown Middle School Art Enrichment Program, she thought that her skills and interests would pair well with the library’s needs. She has also won many ribbons in previous summers at local fairs, for her photography and baking entries, as well as other art work.

Sabrina researched several popular crafts, and settled on three projects that she was somewhat familiar with and that she feels will appeal to the ‘tween age group. The research, planning, and shopping for the craft project materials has been more time-consuming than she expected, said Sabrina.

After presenting the program ideas to Ms Weber, Sabrina is pleased to offer her programs, beginning July 28.

“Cracked Marble Necklaces and Key Chains” will take place Tuesday, July 28, from 3 to 4:30 pm. The class is limited to ten students, ages 11 to 14. Participants will bake glass marbles, quickly chill them, and then create original necklaces and key chains using the gemlike cracked marble pieces.

On Monday, August 3, participants can try another medium for creating necklaces and key chains, when Sabrina offers “Modge Podge Necklaces and Key Chains.” This class is for ten students, ages 11 to 14, and takes place from 3 to 4:30 pm. Using modge podge paste, fabric and metal washers, participants will go home with original creations.

The final program takes place Tuesday, August 11. Sabrina will lead a class on “Temporary Tattoos.” This class, also limited to ten students, ages 11 to 14, will run from 3 to 4:30 pm. Participants will create an original drawing on special paper, said Sabrina, then ink the paper, and apply it. The temporary tattoos last several days.

All classes will be presented at the library, 25 Main Street, and there is a supplies cost of $3 per class, per person. Registration is necessary for each program, at www.chboothlibrary.org.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Sabrina.
