When a husband and wife don’t communicate, they sometimes end up finding out surprising – even shocking – things about one other. That’s the premise of The Problem by AR Gurney, one of the plays featured in Town Players of Newtown’s “Hot August Nights – One Acts,” which will run weekends July 31-August 8.

In addition to The Problem, the production also includes The Proposal by Anton Chekhov; Porch by Jack Heifner; Wanted for Dinner, an original play written by Newtown resident Elizabeth Young; and Lovely Letters, an original play written by Bethel resident Michael Giuliano.

Producer Nick Kaye said the production has something for everyone.

“Laughter, touching moments, family discord — it’s one of the advantages of producing a night of one acts,” said Mr Kaye. “People love variety. We’re also excited about the opportunity to feature works by local playwrights, as well as to welcome new actors to our stage, which is all part of the community theater experience.”

Directors for “Hot August Nights – One Acts,” are Sherry Asch, Timothy Huebenthal, Terry Polvay, and Terry Sagedy.

The production features the talents of Ms Asch, Sam Bass, Bryn Berg, Sherri Bresson, Shawn Brown, Bryelle Burgus, Christopher Cooney, Brian DeToma, Miles Everett, Jennifer Ju, Pam Meister, Roberto Perez, and Danette Riso.

Curtain for “Hot August Nights – One Acts” will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, with one 2 pm Sunday matinee on August 2.

Tickets are $18, $10 children 10 and under for all performances. Please note that this production may not be considered suitable for younger children.

‘Hay Fever’ Continues

Meanwhile, Town Players will continue its 80th anniversary season with performances of Noel Coward’s Hay Fever for two additional weekends.

Newtown Bee Theater Reviewer Elizabeth Young said the production “is being delightfully played out with superb mastery of the disingenuousness and drama essential to this theater genre” in her recent review (; June 30, 2015).“‘Hay Fever’ Hits Just The Right Notes”

Director Ruth Baumgartner, Ms Young continued, “has infused the piece with a light hearted, pitch perfect tone. It is staged beautifully on a set designed by Al Kulscar, which emanates British polish with an element of silliness.”

Hay Fever will continue weekends to July 18. Curtain times are 8 pm Fridays and Saturdays, with one remaining Sunday afternoon matinee on July 12 at 2.

Tickets are $22 for evening shows, and $18 for the matinee performance.
