Shoplifting Incident

At about 10 am on July 3, police responded to the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street after receiving a complaint that a shoplifting incident had occurred there.

Police said their investigation found that Yolanda Graciela Taveras, 57, of Gaylordsville had taken more than $178 worth of store merchandise without paying for it.

Police then charged Taveras with sixth-degree larceny. After processing, police released Taveras on a written promise to appear on July 15 in Danbury Superior Court.

Road Rage

At about 12:37 am on July 4, state police received a complaint that a road rage incident, in the form of a verbal argument between two parties, was taking place along eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, so they went there to investigate.

State police said they investigated the case and then charged Scott Teater, 37, of Danbury with breach of peace. After arrest processing, state police released Teater on $5,000 nonsurety bail for a July 14 court appearance.

Drug Charge

Police said that at about 7:28 pm on July 3, they responded to a complaint about a person’s presence at the Botsford Drive-In, a takeout restaurant at 282 South Main Street in Botsford.

Police said that after investigating that complaint, they charged Hunter Knapp, 22, of 22 Oakview Drive with illegal possession of drugs.

Following arrest processing, police released Knapp on $500 nonsurety bail for a July 24 court appearance.

Electronic Device

Police said that at about 5:50 pm on July 2, they were using an electronic license plate reader in an enforcement project on Hawleyville Road, near its intersection with Covered Bridge Road.

The device electronically scans the marker plates of passing vehicles to learn whether there are any pending violations connected to those vehicles.

Police said they then stopped a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica auto near the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Saw Mill Road, which the reader had indicated was linked to some pending violations.

Police said they then charged motorist Richard Quirk, 49, of 7 Mountain Laurel Lane with driving with a suspended vehicle registration, driving with a suspended license, and driving without automotive insurance.

Quirk was released on a written promise to appear in court on July 17, according to police.

Truck Off Road

Police said that trucker Segunda Armijos, 37, of Danbury was driving a 1995 Chevrolet C-3500 dump tuck southward on South Main Street, near Country Club Road, at about 7:50 am on July 2, when a noncontact vehicle in front of that truck stopped to allow another vehicle to make a turn.

Police said that Armijos could not stop in time to avoid a collision with the auto in front of him, so he swerved to the right, but struck and knocked over a sign.

There were no injuries. Police issued Armijos an infraction for making a restricted turn, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, and failure to have a driver’s license.

Warrant

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for his arrest, Cord Zarembski, 24, of 31 Tunnel Road turned himself over to police at the police station on July 3 and was charged with fifth-degree larceny.

Police said they received a complaint on May 16 from a person stating that someone had stolen his power tools, including a chain saw, a power saw, an automatic nailer, and an angle grinder, among other tools. The stolen tools were valued at roughly $1,000.

Police said their investigation found that Zarembski had stolen the tools. After arrest processing, police released Zarembski on a written promise to appear in court on July 23.

Huntingtown Crash

Police report that a 50-year-old woman was driving a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck northward on Huntingtown Road, near its intersection with Old Town Road, about 3:30 pm on July 2, when a southbound black dump truck struck the Ford and did not stop. The woman was not injured.

The dump truck likely has a damaged left, exterior rear-view mirror, police said. Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone who knows the dump truck driver’s identity to contact officer John McCluskey at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Chevy Off Road

Police said that motorist Alfia Sutieva, 23, of 46 Little Brook Lane was driving a 2005 Chevrolet sedan southward on New Lebbon Road, near Beagle Trail, at about 3:30 pm on July 4, when the vehicle went off the left side of the road and entered a wooded area.

Sutieva was injured in the accident, but refused medical attention, police said. Police said Sutieva received an infraction for driving with an unsafe tire and for making a restricted turn.

Moving Violations

State police said they were using an electronic license plate reader at about 10 am on June 30 on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10, when the device indicated that a passing vehicle had some pending violations against it.

State police said they stopped motorist Jason Parent, 30, of Hartford to investigate near Exit 9 and then charged him with driving an unregistered vehicle, improper use of marker plates, and with a registration/license violation.

International Vs Audi

At about 8:25 am on June 29 on westbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 9, motorist James Byrnes, 58, of Oxford, who was driving a 2012 Audi A-8 sedan, slowed to a stop for heavy traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by Richard Anderson, 49, of Newfield, N.J., who was driving a 2011 International truck, state police said.

Byrnes reported pain, but refused ambulance services, state police said.

State police said they verbally warned Anderson for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Volvo Accident

Motorist Robert Bogrette, 47, of Southbury, who was driving a 2004 Volvo S-60 auto on westbound Interstate 84 about two miles east of Exit 11, at about 6 am on July 1, lost control of the vehicle after it started to hydroplane on the wet road, state police said.

The Volvo then struck some concrete barrier railing, state police said. There were no injuries. Bogrette was traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.

I-84 Collision

Motorist Mei Wu, 52, of West Hartford, who was driving a 2007 Infiniti auto eastward on Interstate 84 in the area between the Exit 9 off-ramp and on-ramp, struck the rear end of a 2010 Ford Escape SUV driven by Douglas Burton, 58, of Avon, state police said.

Wu reported pain, but did not want ambulance services, state police said. Wu received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to state police.

Botsford Hill

Police report that at about 9:05 pm on June 30, motorist Samantha Lello, 17, of Shelton, who was driving a 2006 Pontiac Torrent SUV eastward on Botsford Hill Road near Swamp Road, went off the right road shoulder and struck an embankment.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Lello a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Chevy Vs Ford

At about 7:47 pm on June 29, motorist Rebecca Pearson, 18, of 25 Maltbie Road, who was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer SUV, was backing out of a parking space in a commercial parking lot at 6 Queen Street, as motorist Stephen O’Brien, 37, of 6 Pomperaug Road was driving a 2008 Ford Focus sedan westward in the parking lot, according to police.

The Chevrolet then struck the Ford, police said. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Probation Violation

Police report they went to the residence of Joseph R. Scarpelli, Jr, 24, of 1 Abbey Lane about 9:30 pm on July 7 and served a warrant against him, charging him with violation of probation in connection with a criminal case. Police said they held Scarpelli on $10,000 bail for a July 8 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Anshel S. Baldamus-Paasche, 23, of Naugatuck turned himself over to police at the police station about 4:45 pm on July 7 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, police said.

Police said that a judge in Waterbury Superior Court had issued the warrant on October 30, 2014, in connection with an arrest that occurred on March 17, 2014, in Woodbury.

After processing, Baldamus-Paasche was released on $250 bail for a July 21 appearance in Waterbury Superior Court, according to police.

Corvette Crash

Motorist Thomas Coryat, 54, of 29 West Street was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Corvette coupe sports car westward on Mt Pleasant Road, near Mt Pleasant Road’s western intersection with Johnnie Cake Lane, at about 4:30 pm on July 7, when he lost control of the vehicle while accelerating in the passing lane, police said.

The Chevrolet then struck some guardrailing along the eastbound road shoulder, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Coryat an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Subaru Vs Mazda

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Wasserman Way and the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84 at about 3:34 pm on July 7.

Police said the collision involved motorist Emma Deweese, 20, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Impreza sedan, and motorist Patrick Shirley, 23, of 17 Boulevard, who was driving a 1990 Mazda Miata sports car.

There were no injuries. Deweese received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, police said.

Warrant

Police said they arrested a prison inmate on a warrant on four charges on July 7 in Danbury Superior Court in connection with an incident that occurred in the spring of 2014 in the Concord Ridge Road area.

Police said they arrested Justin Hazel, 30, of Enfield on charges of second-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit second-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, and sixth-degree larceny. Three of those charges are felonies.

Hazel allegedly burglarized a house and stole a motor vehicle, plus various items, from the residential property, police said.

Hazel was arraigned on the charges on July 7, but did not enter pleas to the charges. He is scheduled to return to court on August 4.

Hazel is serving a five-year prison sentence at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Uncasville on a conviction for third-degree larceny.

State police report a three-car accident on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, at about 4:46 pm on July 1. The autos were traveling in heavy rush-hour traffic when the accident occurred. State police said motorist Michael Seminoro, 32, of Milford, who was driving a 2009 Saturn Aura, stopped, after which motorist Gary Perez, 44, Shelton, who was driving a 2014 Dodge Challenger, started to slow down. Motorist Jason Savoca, 18, of 9 Hedge Meadow Lane, who was driving a 2004 Acura TSX, then struck the rear end of the Dodge, pushing the Dodge into the rear end of the Saturn, state police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Perez to Waterbury Hospital on a report of pain, state police said. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to the incident to clean up a fuel spill. State police said they issued Savoca an infraction for following too closely.
