Newtown Native And Owner Of Sam's Tree Farm

Samuel Nezvesky, 91, died July 12. Born January 12, 1920, in the Huntingtown District of Newtown, where he lived his entire life. He always said he couldn't read a map, so he never left Newtown.

He did leave, however, to serve his country during World War II as a corporal in the US Army, and spent more than three years in northern Africa and Europe as a longshoreman.

In the 1950s and 60s he was a Newtown fire warden. He was a Founding and Charter Member of The United Fire Company of Botsford.

Known for his compassion to others, especially those less fortunate, Mr Nezvesky performed many a mitzvah in his lifetime. He was a concerned civic activist, writing letters to The Bee editor to ensure that public officials were acting properly and appropriate in their positions.

Active at Adath Israel in his younger years, Mr Nezvesky was known for gathering family and friends to replace roofs, plant trees, and anything else that was needed.

He is survived by his children Joel, and his wife Lisa; Janis, and her husband Marty Schertzer; Jay, and his wife Maritza; and his daughter-in-law Bonnie, all of Newtown. Ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive Mr Nezvesky.

He was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Snow) Nezvesky, and two sons, Jerold and Jeffry.

Services were held at Bikur Cholim Cemetery in Fairfield, on Thursday, July 14.

Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Adath Israel, 115 Huntingtown Road, Newtown CT 06470, or The United Fire Company of Botsford (Botsford Fire Rescue), PO Box 335, Botsford CT 06404-0335; and/or do a good deed (mitzvah) for someone less fortunate. A favorite saying of his (Pennsylvania Dutch): "Drive good the car."
