SHERMAN — The Sherman Players currently have a whimsical, toe tapping piece on stage. Stepping Out is as light and breezy as a summer evening. Written by Richard Harris and directed by Kate Kovacs, this tale of sisterhood is delightful.

In the confines of a well-loved dance study, a group of women find friendship and learn something about themselves that is as valuable as the tap shoes that brought them together. Under the tutelage of Mavis (played by Angie Joachim), a gathering of women and one man, form fast friendships which endure slights, arguments and personal despair, all while learning the art of dance.

The dancers — played by William Coates, Michele Leigh, Jana Makejava, Tina Morrissette, Karen Robinson, Julie Schorr, Erin Walsh and Morgana Kate Watson — come together from varied backgrounds and skills as well as a host of baggage.

Accompanied by a cranky pianist (Patsy Goodman), their enthusiasm for the practice and determination to get it right delivers the troupe to the big stage and a show stopping finale.

As with all productions, in rehearsal it looks like a shambles, until it doesn’t. When the lights go up on these newly minted performers, they shine.

Joachim does a lovely job of keeping her team moving forward while containing her frustration. She also reveals an aptitude for dance as Mavis relives her heyday.

All of the dancers have developed their characters well, creating distinction between each one, as they overcome their differences for the greater good of friendship and teamwork.

William Coates is Geoffrey, the production’s sole male. Coates is charming in his depiction of Geoffrey overcoming his significant shyness only to find himself leading the way. His mild flirtation with Andy (Jana Makejava) is a heartwarming side story.

The opening night audience offered up hearty laughs and applause. Stepping Out is sweet, slightly bawdy, and completely charming. Don’t miss this opportunity to smile and tap your own toes at the Sherman Playhouse.

Performances continue weekends to July 23, with Friday and Saturday curtain at 8 pm, and one remaining matinee on Sunday, July 17, at 2 pm. Tickets are $24 adults, $12 students, and available through shermanplayers.org or 860-354-3622.

Sherman Playhouse is a non-Equity theater company at 5 Route 39 (next to the firehouse) in Sherman.

The lone male in Stepping Out, William Coates offers a charming depiction of a man who overcomes shyness and finds himself leading others.
