Two former Newtown residents, Lauren Stevens and Taylor Morris, sisters who grew up in Newtown, had a very special week. Lauren and Alex Stevens, who are now residents of Danbury, welcomed their baby Cameron Walter Stevens to the world at Danbury Hospital on July 5 at 3:18 am. Then on July 7, Taylor and Thomas Morris, who are residents of Bethel, welcomed their baby girl Avery Jacqueline Morris to the world, also at Danbury Hospital. “Minutes after Avery was born her cousin Cameron was in the nursery waiting to be the first family member to meet her,” Lauren shared this week. Pictured is the cousins’ first meeting at Danbury Hospital. Congratulations to both families!

National Audubon Society recently announced its 2022 Audubon Photography Awards. All of the photos are available to peruse online at audubon.org. Almost 2,500 photographers and videographers submitted nearly 10,000 entries this year. All entries were then selected anonymously by three panels. The grand-prize photo, taken by Jack Zhi, captured white-tailed kites in flight. This cat can’t help but scroll through the photos to see all these amazing birds.

Due to the need for as much parking as possible on Main Street and behind Edmond Town Hall on Thursday afternoon, the opening night of Top Gun: Maverick has been postponed from July 14, to Friday, July 15. A very large crowd was expected on Thursday for the calling hours for lifelong Sandy Hook resident and longtime Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Chief Bill Halstead, who died unexpectedly on July 8. In addition to the already-planned screenings at 1 and 7 pm Friday, the theater has added a 4 pm screening on Saturday, July 16 (in addition to the 1 and 7 pm shows already planned), and screenings at 1 and 7 pm Monday, July 18. Tickets are still $3.50 each, available in advance and at the box office at 45 Main Street.

Here’s a “save the date” to remember: Parent Connection Inc announced it is hosting the Kevin J. Carolan Memorial Golf Tournament for the 12th year. The event is set for Monday, October 3, at The Golf Club at Oxford Greens in Oxford. An announcement for the event shared, “Kevin was an individual that believed in our mission and supported every element of our operation. He cared deeply about the impact we were making and the lives we were changing. In his honor, we raise funds to continue with our programming, support groups and special events.” Registration is open and available online at ctparentconnection.org/pc-golf-registration.

Did you catch this week’s supermoon? A supermoon happens when the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth than normal. This week, I learned thanks to an Associated Press announcement, ahead of the July 13 super moon, that this week’s moon was called a “’buck moon,’ a reference to the time of year when new antlers are growing on male deer, or bucks.”

There was even more far-out news this week. On July 11, as announced by NASA, President Joe Biden released one of the James Webb Space Telescope’s first images in a preview event at the White House in Washington. Then NASA, in partnership with ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency), released more photos, full-color images and “spectroscopic data during a televised broadcast” on July 12 from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. NASA described the first image from the James Webb Space Telescope as “the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date. Known as Webb’s First Deep Field, this image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 is overflowing with detail. Thousands of galaxies — including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared — have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.” See the first image and more online at nasa.gov/webbfirstimages.

If the stars seem too far away, here’s a journey closer to home: Just flip to this week’s Sports section. Go on a five-day ocean journey from Annapolis, Md. to Bermuda with Rick Irving in this week’s print edition. I’m not sure if this cat would get seasick or be in fish food heaven but it sounds like one heck of a voyage that you will want to read about.

I don’t have too many details yet, but I learned this week that Newtown Community Center is planning an Outdoor Movie Night with Newtown Parks and Recreation for August 8, and the movie playing will be Disney’s Encanto. Make sure to keep that evening open if you want to join the family Madrigal under the stars.

This Sunday, July 17, is National Ice-Cream Day, and Newtown Community Center has a way for those of all ages to celebrate. Free for community center members (nonmembers call for details), all ages are invited to celebrate from, 5 to 8 pm, with activities including face painting and family events, also frozen treats while supplies last, registration required; 203-270-4349. Make sure you don’t miss out on local events like this one, by checking our calendars weekly in print and online. The online calendar listing for this event is available at newtownbee.com/calendar/?event_id=38008.

I’ll reward myself three scoops of ice-cream if you promise next week to ... Read me again.
