Newtown Public Schools Facilities Director Bob Gerbert, Jr, answered questions about the Hawley School building at 29 Church Hill Road this week.

In what year was it purchased or built? The original building was opened in 1921. Two additions have been built since, in 1948 and 1997.

Who or what entity owns or oversees the building? The Town of Newtown owns the building.

How large is the building? 60,460 square feet.

How many rooms does the building contain? 29 classrooms.

What purpose/purposes does the building serve? It is an elementary school for kindergarten to fourth grade.

What is one interesting fact about the building? The original construction was funded by donations from Mary Hawley. The school will celebrate is 100th birthday in 2021.

What is the most common question you get about the building and the answer? The most common question is, “When will we get air conditioning?” This is currently planned for summer of 2021.
