Hospitalâs Nuclear Departments
Get ICANL Accreditation
DANBURY ââ The departments of nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology at Danbury Hospital recently received accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL), a voluntary peer-review accrediting body representing six medical organizations.
ICANL evaluates the quality of critical elements of facilities performing nuclear studies. Accreditation was granted through February 2006, after a labor-intensive process of documenting the hospitalâs nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, laboratory and cardiology practices, policies and procedures, and an on-site visit by ICANL.
There are more than 3,900 hospital-based nuclear medicine departments in the United States, according to the Society of Nuclear Medicine. Danbury Hospital is among the first of only 205 labs that have earned ICANL accreditation so far. Danbury Hospital performed approximately 14,000 nuclear medicine tests a year, more than twice the number of other hospitals of similar size.
âWe have a very busy, vibrant program here at Danbury Hospital,â said Shiv Gupta, MD, medical director of Nuclear Medicine.
âThis accreditation confirms what we have been practicing in nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology,â said Dr Gupta, âto provide the highest quality of diagnostic services and treatment of various diseases by using the safest isotopes and state-of-the-art technology.â
More than 10 million nuclear medicine imaging and therapeutic procedures are performed each year in the United States. There are more than 100 nuclear medicine tests used in a broad range of medical specialties, including pediatrics, psychiatry, cardiology, neurological conditions, skeletal disorders, and cancer care. Â
