Local Service Men & Women

Like most towns across the country, Newtown has its share of men and women currently serving their country and missing home.

During its Vacation Bible School this week, children at Newtown Christian Church have been following a theme of “Service To Others,” including giving back to those in need.

“These brave men and women [in service] willing to give so much for our everyday comforts deserve some of these same comforts delivered to their temporary lives across the world,” said the Reverend Jack Tanner.

As part of a community project, the youth attending NCC’s vacation bible school have been preparing care packages and handmade cards for Army Troop 411 Civil Affairs Unit, which is home to several local servicemen and women deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Residents are invited to help the youth fill those care packages with donations.

“We are looking for a few main items — beef jerky, chapstick, hand lotion, sunscreen, hard candy, and packaged snack foods — but any donation will be accepted,” said Rev Tanner. “If you dislike shopping, a check payable to Newtown Christian Church may also be made out for this project.”

Any donations should be dropped off at the church, 210 Sugar Street, by 9:30 am Saturday, August 2. For additional information call Newtown Christian Church at 426-6189.
