Helen May Tilt Honychurch

Managed Trumbull Lunch Programs

Helen May Tilt Honychurch died at home July 29, surrounded by her family. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on May 10, 1919.

She is survived by two daughters, Maureen and her husband, John Matz, of Newtown and Beverly Honychurch of Fairfield; two sons, Reginald Honychurch of Barkhamsted and Douglas Honychurch and his wife, Phyllis, of Trumbull; and her sister, Joan Tilt of Toronto. Additionally, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Susan Zwart of Essex, Mass., Kristin Dunkle and Timothy Honychurch of Trumbull, Katherine Matz of Manchester, Christina Matz of Newtown, Leila Rinehart of New York City, Adam Rinehart of Fairfield, and Alana Rinehart of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and ten great-grandchildren. Her brothers James Tilt and George Tilt; infant son, Warren Honychurch; and grandson Adam Honychurch predeceased Mrs Honychurch.

At an early age her family moved to MacGregor, Manitoba, where she spent her childhood. She returned to Toronto as a teenager and moved to Trumbull shortly after World War II. She lived in Trumbull for the remainder of her life.

Mrs Honychurch worked in the Trumbull school system’s hot lunch program from 1955 until she retired in 1984. During her career she managed the hot lunch programs in Jane Ryan, Long Hill, Center, and Nichols Schools. She was an excellent cook, loved to eat, and delighted in enjoying a well-prepared meal.

Until a few years ago she loved to travel, often to see family and friends in foreign countries. Of all of the countries she visited, she enjoyed Scotland the most. She was a longtime and active member of the Trumbull Congregational Church and also of the Stern Village Social Club. After her retirement, Mrs Honychurch volunteered many hours of her time at Meals on Wheels and the Christian Heritage School lunch program. She also provided nursery care at Calvary Evangelical Free Church for a weekly mothers’ Bible study.

Mrs Honychurch was hardworking, friendly, and helpful to others. She loved to meet people and will be remembered for her integrity. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, August 2, from 3 to 7 pm, in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced at the Trumbull Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Trumbull Congregational Church, 3115 Reservoir Avenue, Trumbull CT 06611.
