A Danbury man was reported in fair condition as a patient in Danbury Hospital on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 2, following a violent one-vehicle accident that occurred on Interstate 84 on the afternoon of Sunday, July 31, which caused extensive travel delays.

State police said that motorist Reed Boccuzzi, 57, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer SUV westward on Interstate 84, east of the Exit 9 off-ramp, at about 4:45 pm, when the vehicle's right-front tire went flat.

Boccuzzi then steered to the left to compensate, but he overcorrected the problem and the SUV entered the highway's grassy median, state police said.

The moving Ford then overturned multiple times, ejecting Boccuzzi from the vehicle, state police said. Boccuzzi was not wearing a seatbelt when the incident happened, according to state police.

Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the accident. The ambulance corps transported Boccuzzi to the hospital on a complaint of back pain, state police said.

State police said they verbally warned Boccuzzi for driving with unsafe tires.

Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel responded to I-84 West Sunday afternoon, about one-quarter of a mile prior to Exit 9, after a blown tire led to a vehicle going out of control and ejecting its driver.
