Highway Incident

State police said that they stopped motorist Joseph McKenna, 23, of New Milford about 11:26 am on July 28 on eastbound Interstate 84 for a motor vehicle violation.

State police said that a search turned up a small amount of heroin in McKenna’s possession.

McKenna was charged with possession of narcotics, following too closely, and failure to drive in the proper lane, according to state police. After posting $1,000 bail, McKenna was released for an August 8 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Ambulance Accident

An Easton Volunteer Emergency Medical Service ambulance was involved in an accident on Eden Hill Road on July 30, police said.

Police said that Matthew Caldwell was driving the ambulance northward near 2 Eden Hill Road at regular traffic speeds during a routine patient transport to Danbury Hospital that afternoon, when Caldwell encountered multiple bicyclists heading southward in the southbound lane while participating in 7th Annual Connecticut Challenge Bike Ride.

To avoid contact with the bicyclists, Caldwell turned to the right, but the ambulance’s running board  struck some rock ledge along the right road shoulder, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

 

Horseshoe Ridge

Sometime between 6 pm on July 22, and 1:30 am on July 23, someone vandalized several curbside residential mailboxes on Horseshoe Ridge Road, causing about $435 in property damage. Dog Incident

Newtown police report that at about 10:49 am on July 27, they received a report that a vehicle had stopped along the side of the road near the intersection of Wasserman Way and Trades Lane, so they went there to investigate.

In checking the situation, Newtown police determined that Danbury police held a warrant on John Rosenschein, 24, of 87 Berkshire Road, Newtown police said. That warrant stems from a past incident.

Police said they charged Rosenschein with failure to respond to an infraction, failure to comply with dog licensing requirements, and allowing a dog to roam.

Police released Rosenschein on $167 bail for an August 10 court appearance.

Utility Line

Police responded about 6:28 pm on July 27 to the area near 12 Park Lane to investigate a report that a suspended utility line was knocked down from its attachment point on a utility pole by the impact of some unknown vehicle. Police are investigating.

Church Hill Accident

About 12:42 pm on July 27, motorist Sandra Bello, 37, of 12 Glenmor Drive, who was driving a 2006 Lincoln Navigator SUV, stopped for traffic conditions on Church Hill Road at its intersection with the Exit 10 off-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84, police report.

Motorist Suzanne DelVento, 46, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2010 Chrysler Sebring sedan, then struck the rear end of the Lincoln, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned DelVento for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident on westbound Mile Hill Road at its intersection with South Main Street about 10:11 am July 26.

In that incident, motorist Richard Litzinger, 60, of Monroe, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Camry sedan, struck the rear end of a 1988 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by James Kelly, 74, of Nunnawauk Meadows, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Litzinger for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Sedan Vs Billboard

Motorist Bolivar Torres, 54, of Danbury was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry sedan southward on South Main Street, south of its intersection with Kay Lane at about 8 am on July 27, when Torres crossed into the opposite lane and went off the left side of the road, striking some support posts for a billboard and a tree located behind the billboard, police report.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the accident, but Torres refused medical attention, police said. Botsford firefighters also responded.

Police said they issued Torres violations for failure to drive to the right and for driving without a license.

Four Charges

Police report they responded to a call informing them that there was a fight in progress at a Spring Trail address at about 8:28 pm on July 29.

Police said they stopped a vehicle on Jeremiah Road which contained suspects in that incident, after which they investigated.

Police said they charged Christopher Basso, 21, of 21 Taunton Lake Drive, who was in that vehicle, with disorderly conduct, second-degree threatening, third-degree assault, and interfering with police. Basso was uncooperative, police said.

The victim of the incident refused to provide a statement and said that he was not injured, police said. Police released Basso on $5,000 bail for an August 9 court appearance.

Saturn Crash

Motorist Marissa Cucco, 18, of 2 Beagle Trail, who was driving a 1997 Saturn SL-1 on the Exit 10 on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84 about 8:18 pm July 29, lost control of the auto and struck some guardcabling, state police said.

Cucco was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.

On-Ramp

Motorist Emily Grier, 18, of 15 Canterbury Lane, who was driving a 2007 Honda Civic about 7:36 pm July 29, was traveling on the Exit 11 on-ramp for Interstate 84, when she lost control of the auto and drove to the left side of the road, state police said.

Grier was not injured. Enforcement information was not available.

Bears Hill Road

Motorist Ronald Frate of 56 Bears Hill Road was driving a 2011 Nissan X-Terra SUV westward on Bears Hill Road, near its intersection with South Main Street about 5:16 am on July 30, when a deer ran into the front bumper of the vehicle, police report. Frate was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Crash At Bridge

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the hazardous sharp curve on Botsford Hill Road where the road passes beneath the Housatonic Railroad’s rail freight bridge at about 12:35 am on July 30.

Police said that motorist Maurice Mahoney of Stratford was driving a 2002 Lexus ES-300 southward on Botsford Hill Road, when he unexpectedly encountered the sharp curve to the west at the bridge. Mahoney then turned the Lexus too quickly, resulting in him losing control of the vehicle, police said.

The Lexus then collided a 2000 Jeep Wrangler being driven northward on Botsford Hill Road by Eric Riddle of 21 Lyrical Lane, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Mahoney an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Five Charges

Police said that they were dispatched to South Main Street, near Sand Hill Plaza, about 6:57 am on August 2 to investigate a report of a disabled motor vehicle.

After investigating, police charged motorist Jose Oquendo, 37, of Bridgeport with driving with a suspended vehicle registration, misuse of marker plates, driving without a license, driving without automotive insurance, and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. Police said Oquendo had in his possession a steak knife that exceeded the legal blade-size limit on knives.

Police said they held Oquendo on $10,000 bail for an arraignment that day in Danbury Superior Court.

Criminal Charges

At about 4:56 am on August 2, Newtown police received a call from Monroe police reporting a disabled vehicle in Newtown on Berkshire Road (Route 34) near the Monroe town line.

Newtown police said that when they arrived at the scene, a Monroe police officer was there. The disabled vehicle was stopped in the eastbound lane facing west.

After investigating, Newtown police charged motorist Anthony Stevenson, 39, of Bridgeport with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a pistol, possession of narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Stevenson was held on $75,000 bail for a court arraignment that day, police said.

Head-On Crash

Police report that two vehicles collided head-on near 103 South Main Street about 5:11 pm on July 27.

The accident involved a 2001 Honda Civic coupe driven by Paulina Krynska, 18, of Monroe, which was also carrying passenger Nichole Dias, 19, of Monroe, and a 2005 Nissan Murano SUV driven by Thomas Nejame, 55, of Danbury, police said.

The three people involved in the accident were transported to the hospital by ambulance volunteers for treatment of injuries.

Hook & Ladder and Botsford firefighters responded to the accident. The incident closed down a section of South Main Street to traffic during the evening rush.

The accident remains under investigation, police said. (Photos of this accident were published in the July 29 edition).

Elm Drive

Police report that they detected motorist Nicholas Caviliere, 23, of 90 Hattertown Road driving a 2002 Chevrolet Prizm at 42 miles per hour southward on Elm Drive in a 25-mph zone near Dickinson Park about 10:22 am on August 2, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they charged Caviliere with traveling unreasonably fast and with driving with a suspended vehicle registration. Caviliere was released on a written promise to appear in court on August 16.

Warrant

After learning that they held a warrant for his arrest, John Ehnot, 47, of 56 Pond Brook Road turned himself over to police at the police station about 11 am on August 2, and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction stemming from a January 7 incident in which he received a violation for failure to obtain a rabies vaccination for a dog or cat, police said.

Police released Ehnot on $136 bail for an August 10 court appearance.

Sixteen Charges

On August 2 at Danbury Superior Court, police served an arrest warrant against Charles C. Fonck III, 33, of Stratford, charging him with 16 crimes stemming from incidents in 2009.

Police arrested Fonck on two counts of illegal use of a credit card, four counts of sixth-degree larceny, six counts of third-degree forgery, and four counts of fifth-degree larceny.

Fonck was arraigned on those charges in court that day. He did not enter pleas to the charges. He is scheduled to return to court on August 15.

Fonck is serving a four-year sentence at Cheshire Correctional Institution for a burglary conviction.

 

Sandy Hook Accident

About 2:14 pm on August 1, motorist Trini Infante-Sanchez, 28, of Waterbury was driving a 2007 Honda Civic sedan eastward on Wasserman Way and then stopped at its intersection with the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84, police said.

Eastbound motorist Christopher McNeil, 29, of Windsor Locks, who was driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck, then struck the Honda from behind, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave McNeil a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. Police said they issued Infante-Sanchez a written warning for failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

Mailbox Prank

In what police described as a prank, someone placed a plastic soda bottle containing a household chemical mixture in a curbside residential mailbox on New Lebbon Road.

The soda bottle exploded at about 11:30 pm on July 27, but did not damage the mailbox, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Officer John McCluskey at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Motorist Sought

About 4:30 pm on July 27, a Honda Accord was waiting in a line of traffic on Church Hill Road at its intersection with Main Street, police said.

A light-blue metallic colored SUV, which was waiting in front of the Honda, then rolled backward, striking the Honda and damaging it, police said. The SUV driver left the scene.

The SUV has a Connecticut marker plate with the letters “CHB” as part of its numbering, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Officer Scott Smith at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Motor Scooter

Police report that Eric Channey, 49, of 160 Mt Pleasant Road was riding a 2011 VIP motor scooter near 47 West Street about 9 pm August 2, when he applied the front brakes and the scooter overturned, injuring him.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported Channey to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the accident. No enforcement action was taken.
