Dog Days Returning

To Peabody Museum

NEW HAVEN — “The Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer” will be celebrated at Yale Peabody Museum on Saturday, August 28, from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, August 29, from noon to 4.

Sheepherding and Frisbee dogs are among the popular events in this annual program all about dogs. Experts will give demonstrations on dogs that help humans, dog obedience, the domestication of cats, and how to be responsible and caring pet owners. Museum staff will display skulls, skeletons and pelts from the Peabody’s wild dog and cat collections. Police dogs will be featured for the first time this year.

David Heiser, Peabody events coordinator, invites the public to bring their dogs and enter them in a variety of fun contests as well as attend workshops to learn about caring for their dogs.

Although there will also be similar programs on cats, Mr Heiser’s word to cat owners is, “Leave your cats at home.”

Dog contests will include “the dog that gives the most kisses in 30 seconds,” “the dog that wags its tail the most in 30 seconds” and “the dog that looks most like its owner.” Saturday and Sunday programs are different; check the complete schedule, contest rules and categories online at www.Peabody.yale.edu/events/dogdays.

Call 203-432-3776 for details or to register for the contests.

The Yale Peabody Museum is at 170 Whitney Avenue. It is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. Admission is $7 adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for ages 3-18 and older students with I.D, and free for ages 2 and under. Programs are included with admission unless noted. The museum is wheelchair accessible.
