Nature Walks At Audubon Center

SOUTHBURY — Leisurely nature walks geared to participants’ interests have been planned at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River for each Wednesday in August. Each will begin at 8 am and last for approximately two hours.

Led by Audubon staff members, the walks will move slowly through the sanctuary, pausing often to view birds and to focus on seasonal aspects of the Bent’s rich natural history.  One of the delights of these walks is the constantly changing natural world that may be seen.

The summer season is beginning to mature in August.  Although the flora and fauna are constantly changing, strollers may be able to see colorful and varied mushrooms. Late summer wildflowers such as brilliant asters and goldenrods are coming into their full glory, and butterflies and dragonflies are at their peak and a delight to watch.

These walks are aimed at people who love nature and who want to continue their lifelong learning of its beauty and wonders. Bent of the River, a 650-acre site owned and managed by National Audubon Society, is at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172.

More than 275 species of birds, mammals, butterflies and amphibians make their home at the Bent, which also includes a rich diversity of tree and plant life.

The center’s historic barn is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, but the grounds and trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours. Call 264-5098 for additional information.
