To The Editor:

No one thought he had a chance in January. No one knew who he was. He had no money. And Connecticut already had a governor, Ned Lamont, who was not remotely unpopular.

Yet here we are, and Josh Elliott has at least a puncher’s chance of upsetting Ned Lamont. I mean in the Aug. 11 Democratic gubernatorial primary, too, because it is clear from the polls and the political energy rising in Connecticut that Ned Lamont is quite upset with Josh Elliott.

Lamont, in fact, has adopted most of Elliott’s campaign platform in an effort to hold off the guy that no one thought had a chance, The governor is going to stand up to Eversource and big corporations, bring us universal healthcare, fix special education, solve the housing crisis. Which is great, and if Ned gets the nomination, I hope he’ll do all those things. But every time I hear or see the governor’s campaign slogan, “We’re Just Getting Started,” I cringe a little. Because he’s been in office eight years, he’s 72 years old, and it really is time to elect the candidate who is not just getting started on these things, and that person would be Josh Elliott.

We need a fairer tax system where the wealthy pay more and property taxes are lower. Elliott’s signature proposal to add a 4% surcharge on income over $1 million — modeled on Massachusetts’s Fair Share Amendment — will become law in Connecticut if we elect him governor. Under Lamont, you’ll never hear about it again.

Let’s put Josh Elliott in the governor’s mansion. The next step forward is to vote for him on August 11.
