Garner Inmate Charged With Bias Crime

Following an incident in Garner Correctional Institution late on the morning of July 27, state police arrested an inmate there charging him with having committed a bias crime in connection with an assault against another male prisoner.

State police said that inmate Matthew Moran, 24, entered the cell of another prisoner and attempted to stab the man with a pen. A fight then occurred between the two men, resulting in both receiving minor injuries, state police said.

Prison staff separated the two men, both of whom were then treated for their injuries, according to state police.

State police arrested Moran on charges of second-degree intimidation based on bias and also second-degree assault. Moran was arraigned on the charges on July 28 in Danbury Superior Court. He is scheduled to return to court on August 18.

Moran is serving a three-year sentence in Garner on a conviction for violating a restraining order.
