Dozens of yellow, pink and blue plastic ducks floated down the Pootatuck River

Saturday as the Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (SHOP), the local

merchants' association, held what was billed as its first annual duck race.

The event, designed to raise money for the future redevelopment of Sandy Hook

Center, was organized by Bill McAllister of Connecticut Insurance and Sandy

Hook Video and Ellie Lewis of the Sandy Hook Diner. Merchants sold the ducks,

each of which had a number on the bottom, for $5 each and provided 20 prizes

for the winners.

At noon a handful of people gathered on the bridge to watch as the plastic

ducks were dumped from a carton into the river. Caught by the current, the

ducks began to move downstream toward the Dayton Street bridge where a boom

had been stretched across the water to catch the ducks as they crossed the

finish line.

There was only one glitch, when one end of the boom let go and some of the

ducks bobbed on past the bridge. Some of the event organizers scrambled to

recover the ducks, using fishing nets and sticks.

"It was a little late in the year to hold this event," Ellie Lewis said, "and

we didn't have much advance publicity so we didn't sell as many ducks as we

would have liked. But it was fun and we'd like to try it again next year -

during warmer weather."

The prize winners include Bill Melko and Donald Speicher, $10 gift

certificates from Sandy Hook Diner; Steve Ellis, two diner T-shirts; Gloria

Nash, Frank Rose and Bret (no last name given), $10 gift certificates from

Sandy Hook Video; Henry Boyd and Karen Vilesco, $10 gift certificates from

Pizza Villa; Miro Cervinek, Tim Powell and Bob Ingram, $15 gift certificates

from 100 Church Hill; Taryn and Matthew Gillette, a $25 value floral

arrangement from Flowers by Donna; Nathalie Lariviere, a $25 gift certificate

from McLaughlin's Vineyards; Darryl Ifkovic, a free piano tuning; Sal

Delregno, a $10 gift certificate from the Grey Horse Gallery and a free

haircut; Billy Reddy, a $10 gift certificate from the Grey Horse Gallery, Vito

Kala, a free service call from M&M Pump Service; Andy Forbell, a $10 gift

certificate from the Grey Horse Gallery, and Ray Costanzo, a free Christmas

tree.
