The Small Town In Newtown
If you need a reminder of just how fast Newtown is growing, just take a drive
through some of the vast subdivisions that are now sprouting in almost every
corner of town. There are whole new neighborhoods that didn't exist five years
ago, and new tracts of empty land are being mapped now for still more
neighborhoods that will be thriving by the turn of the century. From a purely
statistical point of view, Newtown is no longer a small town. Fortunately,
statistics don't provide the only perspective on life in Newtown.
The small town in Newtown still lives, and if you want to see it, be sure to
attend the annual tree lighting sponsored by the Chamer of Commerce in the Ram
Pasture Friday evening at 6:30. There under the lights of the tree in the glow
of a spectacular necklace of luminaria that loops around the open pasture off
to Main Street and other approahces, old friends and neighbors will greet each
other, and new friends will be made. People will sing together, laugh
together, and dispel the impersonal ambivalence can weaken the spirit of a
community. It is the perfect precursor to a whole weekend of activities
cluminating in the Family Life Center's Holiday Festival on Sunday.
If the pressing crowds in the malls and the short tempers on the highways are
getting to you this holiday season, we urge you to spend a little time this
weekend remembering what hometown life is all about. Start by bringing your
family to the Ram Pasture to sing some carols and to reignite the small town
spirit of Newtown.
