The Newtown High School girls' soccer team shook off a serious ankle injury to

star forward Stephanie Licht and defeated Immaculate 4-1 in the Western

Connecticut Conference semifinals. Katie Ball scored a pair of goals for the

Lady Indians and Lynn Lattanzio and Sarah McQuilken each added insurance

goals. NHS keeper Regan Harris earned the win in the goal but saw her

school-record streak of ten-consecutive shutouts come to an end. Harris hadn't

allowed a goal since September 17.

Joe Smith shattered the Bethel course record as he guided the Newtown High

cross country team to a Western Connecticut Conference crown at the

championship meet.

overall. Newtown's Craig McCarthy placed fourth overall while teammates Ryan

Harris (14th), Chris Pond (17th), and Mike Willis (20th) filled in the team's

other spots.

Newtown scored 56 to edge Brookfield who had 61. Smith finished the season

undefeated as did the Indians team.

The Newtown High School volleyball team finished its regular season with

losses to Brookfield and Bethel which eliminated them from the WCC playoff

picture.

Behind the efforts of Mary Jerolman, Dawn Parrott, Beth Graves, and Jacquie

Smith, Newtown played to a record of 9-2 before the two losses knocked them

out.

The NHS football team procured its school-record 17th consecutive victory as

it improved to 6-0 on the season with a 21-6 win over New Fairfield.

Though the victory was sweet, the Newtown defense allowed its first points of

the season after having shutout its first five opponents.

Pete Meier, Mike Wertz, and Bob Knapp all scored touchdowns for the Indians

while Bob Scott, Bart Smith, Bill Clark, and Dan Weaver continued to pace the

rock solid NHS defense.

This week in 1971

The NHS boys' soccer team improved to 7-2 on the season with shutout victories

over Masuk and Abbott Tech. Scott Mentley, Paul Schierloh, and Nick Castellano

all scored in the Indians' 3-0 win over Masuk while Paul Miles recorded a hat

trick and Dennis Kean and Schierloh added tallies in a 5-0 win over Tech. NHS

goalie Bruce Aiken recorded his fifth shutout of the season.

In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Newtown and New Milford

played to a 0-0 tie on the football field at Hawley School. Rick Matern caught

a 17-yard pass from Marc Long and Marc Richardson and Wayne Hartman followed

that with short-gainer runs as Newtown advanced to the New Milford five-yard

line for its deepest penetration of the day before the drive stalled there.

The Social Athletic Club (SAC) was saddened by the death of charter member

Walter Trumbull. The clubhouse holds many reminders of him such as autographed

baseballs, Grantland Rice's last book, an autographed picture of Jack Dempsey

which Mr Trumbull took the trouble of having him sign especially for the boys,

and many sports books which he sent back whenever he travelled to the south

west. As a sports editor for many years, and a member of a distinguished

family, he knew most of the sports greats of his time.
