Summer Science: Little Boats On A Little Pond
(with cut)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Kids love playing in water, and, if you give them a piece of aluminum foil,
they will love learning science at the same time.
The idea is to build a boat out of a small piece of aluminum foil and then to
test it. How many pennies can the boat hold?
Kids will have fun trying to make an unsinkable barge. Through figuring out
what made the barge sink, they will try a new plan for their next boat.
Besides having fun, the children will learn good strategies for making
something that will work.
This activity is great for children of all ages, pre-school through upper
elementary school.
If you want to include a refresher in math and coin values, use a variety of
coins, and have kids see how much money the boat can carry. (If you don't have
enough loose change around, marbles or small pebbles also work fine.)
Other easy variations are making the boat that can withstand the biggest
waves, or current, or the one that can make it to the other side of the pool
first.
