Phillips-Selkirk Holds Premiere Auction

SAINT LOUIS, MO. -- Nine hundred thirty-six lots were sold in four sessions by
Phillips-Selkirk on May 10-13. This was the gallery's first auction under its
new name after the London-based Phillips acquired Selkirk. The sale grossed a
fraction under $1 million.
Garnering the highest bid of the four days, "Washington Park Club," an oil on
canvas painted by Franz Dvorak in 1892, reached $38,000, going to a private
buyer.
A 1920 oil on canvas by Oscar Berninghaus, "Leading His Ponies," sold
privately at $25,000; a 4.7 carat diamond ring, the diamond flanked by a pair
of round cut sapphires weighing a total of 1.3 carats, fetched 22,000; and an
India ink on paper by Pierre Soulages (b. 1919), dated 1955, sold at $21,000.
An English Gothic Revival oak longcase clock by Joseph Jennens of London,
circa 1880, nine feet tall, went to a private collector at $11,500; a Persian
Sarouk handwoven wool pile carpet, 11'4" by 20'10", went to a decorator for
$10,000; and an American Handel reverse painted table lamp on a bronze
standard reached $8,250.
A copy of Contemplations by Elbert Hubbard, bound in hand tooled leather and
fitted into a hand carved oak presentation box, dated 1920, generated much
interest, rising well above the $2,000 estimate to a final $6,750, going to a
phone bidder.
An antique French gilt bronze and white marble clock garniture by Haulding &
Cie was purchased at $3,000, and a pair of 19«-inch Royal Vienna porcelain
urns, signed "K. Wildner," illustrated with classical scenes, achieved $6,900.
A large collection of antique Chinese Rose Medallion ranged from $800 to
$2,000.
A French Haviland porcelain platter with handpainted decoration, 20« inches
long, reached $2,200; a large collection of wine, sold in 120 lots, averaged
$700 per lot; and a pair of upholstered chairs with mahogany frames was
purchased on the phone at $4,200.
Prices quoted do not reflect a required 15 percent buyer's premium.
