Volunteers Pick Up 11 Tons Of Trash From The Roadsides

B Y A NDREA Z IMMERMANN

Is it possible for volunteers armed with only gloves and plastic bags to

collect 11 tons of litter from Newtown roadsides in one day?

The 175 people who participated in Lose The Litter Day on April 28 did just

that, according to Judy Holmes of Newtown Environmental Action Team.

"We had a really big turn out - several brownie troops, a group from Christ

The King Lutheran Church, Lion's Club members, and a lot of families," said

Mrs Holmes. "[First Selectman] Bob Cascella was also there for a couple of

hours in the morning."

M'Liss Conetta of New Lebbon Road made up flyers and put them in the mailboxes

of 26 homes in the neighborhood. Seven of the families (including "nine kids

and three pregnant women") worked from 9 am to 2 pm on Sunday picking up

everything from cigarette packs, to tailgates of cars, to tires, said Mrs

Conetta.

"Our road is such a desolate, quiet place at night - it's a place where people

dump," she said. "Most of the people on this side of New Lebbon are new to the

area and it's very discouraging to see all this trash." Lose The Litter Day

was a good opportunity to clean up the eyesore, she said.

"Things went really smoothly," said Mrs Holmes. When the number of volunteers

exceeded the number of gloves, "Newtown Hardware were very nice to sell us

some gloves at cost to replenish supply," she added.

The townwide Sunday clean-up yielded six tires, a bucket load (two to three

tons) of iron, and four loads (eight or nine tons) of garbage, according to

Director of Highways Joe Tani, whose crew has been collecting the garbage from

drop-off sites. But that's not the final tally, he said, because they haven't

finished the collection.

"I'd like to relay a message to the public: Please stop dumping on our

community," said Mrs Conetta. "We don't want our kids growing up amongst the

trash. It was a good lesson for them to see us taking care of the

environment...This is such beautiful woods. People dumping here is pretty

shameful."

The next meeting of Newtown Environmental Action Team will be held 7:30 pm,

May 13 in Edmond Town Hall. Anyone interested in joining the group may attend

the meeting, or call Judy Holmes at 426-5675.
