Meals On Wheels Finds A New Source Of Meals

With the imminent closing of Fairfield Hills Hospital, Ashlar of Newtown has

become the new source of meals for Newtown Meals on Wheels.

The switch was made on Tuesday, November 1, after an extensive search by the

nonprofit local agency to find the best supplier.

"Ashlar will offer several advantages," said Nancy Larin, president of Newtown

Meals on Wheels. "It provides a geriatric menu and the dietary restrictions

will all be on a computer; the staff is friendly and anxious to help; the cost

will not need to be increased; and the pick up and return of the (food)

carriers will be close to the door, which has an automatic opener."

Currently, 24 Newtown residents are served a noontime meal by 110 Meals on

Wheels volunteers. Each driver volunteers once a month to deliver the meals on

a route that includes eight stops during the noon hour.

Elyse Dent, director of food services for Ashlar, worked with Mrs Larin to

plan the transition. Recipients of the low-cost meals are housebound,

including elderly people who live alone and younger people who are temporarily

incapacitated. Meals, including special diets, are prepared under the

direction of a dietician.

Bobbe Bowles, publicity chairman, said there is always need for regular and

substitute drivers because the number of volunteers fluctuates. To learn about

volunteering, call Becky Smith, driver coordinator, at 426-3913.
