School Project Presentation Postponed
The Legislative Council Wednesday night postponed a presentation by the Board
of Education on proposed school building projects until the Wednesday,
November 15, council meeting.
The presentation, which had been on the agenda for the November 1 meeting, was
postponed because the architect for the project had another commitment and was
unable to attend.
The update on the projects was requested because of concerns that some council
members have expressed over the increasing costs of the planned renovations
and improvements to the high school and Hawley School.
Members of the council's Finance Committee met two weeks ago to address the
spending proposals which have increased to more than $30 million. At that
meeting, council member Pierre Rochman suggested that a financial analyst be
hired to scrutinize the school district's spending plans.
Finance Committee Chairman Joseph McGowan said his committee hasn't abandoned
the possibility of hiring a consultant.
"We still have the opportunity to hire a consultant if we don't agree with
what (the school board's architect) presents at the next meeting," he said.
