Ten-Year-Old All Stars
Fall In Diamond Invitational
After a 16-game post season schedule, the Newtown Little League's ten-year-old
all-star team finally came to the end of the road on Tuesday night, August 1,
falling 11-0 to Shelton in the finals of the Newtown Invitational Tournament.
The town's youngest stars managed only three hits, those coming off the bats
of Jason Glander, Ronnie Isler, and Alan Fisher.
On the previous day, Newtown had lost 23-9 to Park City at a tournament in
Shelton. Park City took a six run lead in the first inning and added 16 in the
second to go ahead 22-0. Newtown mounted a rally, but fell short as the game
was called after four innings because of the ten-run rule.
Isler was 2-for-2 for the Newtown stars in the game, while Dan Murphy,
Glander, Chris Evans, and Tommy Ermini all had hits during the comeback
effort. The ball had started rolling downhill for Newtown on Saturday, July
30, when the three-game slide began.
On that day, Newtown was the victim of a no-hitter in an 11-0 loss to Trumbull
National. Though things finished up on a sour note, Newtown coach Ray Craven
was happy with the progress he saw from the young all-stars. " They got a lot
of games in this summer and that's the objective, " he said. " Sometimes you
have to look beyond the winning and losing. I think the kids learned a lot of
valuable lessons along the way. "
This year's Newtown ten-year-old all-star team consisted of Jim Boccuzzi, John
Brundage, Chris Evans, Mike Forestieri, Andrew Fiscella, Alan Fisher, Joe
Gantert, Jason Glander, Jeremy Graves, Ron Isler, Dan Murphy, Trevor Seferi,
Chris Sheehan, Tony Willie, Kevin Woessner, and Tommy Ermini. Brundage,
Fiscella, and Woessner were the only nine-year-olds on the squad.
