Driver Warned Following Fire Truck Collision
Police said this week they have concluded their investigation into an accident
between a fire truck and a sport utility vehicle in Sandy Hook Center on the
afternoon of August 23.
Police said they issued a written warning to fire truck driver Bill Shpunt,
40, of 80 Cedar Hill Road stating that he failed to slow or stop an emergency
vehicle, displaying its emergency lights and sounding its siren, when going
through a red traffic signal.
In the accident, the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company's rescue
truck collided with a Ford Explorer at the intersection of Riverside Road,
Washington Avenue, Church Hill Road and Glen Road.
At the time of the collision, the rescue truck was on its way to a motor
vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate-84, between Exits 11 and 12.
Police said the 1987 Ford fire truck was approaching the four-way intersection
from Riverside Road and the Ford Explorer, driven by Cynthia Tilson, 39, of 85
Alberts Hill Road, was approaching the intersection in the Explorer from
Washington Avenue before the collision occurred.
There were no injuries.
