Garner Inmate Commits Suicide

A correction officer found an inmate at Garner Correctional Institution

hanging in his cell early Tuesday morning, according to a state Department of

Correction (DOC) spokesman.

Marlon Samuels, 24, of West Haven was pronounced dead at Danbury Hospital

after he apparently used a sheet to commit suicide in the cell which only he

occupied, said DOC spokesman William Flower.

Samuels had threaded the sheet through a ventilation grating in the cell's

ceiling, Mr Flower said.

Samuels started serving a prison sentence at Garner last November on a

conviction for first-degree robbery.

When he was found hanging in his cell, Samuels was housed in Garner's

restricted housing unit because he had been involved in fights with other

inmates, Flower said. Samuels was slated to return to the general prison

population Tuesday, according to the DOC spokesman.

A correction officer brought Samuels breakfast at his cell at 5:45 am, Flower

said. Samuels returned his tray to the officer when the officer came to the

cell at 6 am, Flower said. Samuels was found hanging in his cell at 6:15 am,

according to the spokesman.

A correction officer cut Samuels down and started cardiopulmonary

resuscitation in an effort to revive him. After being transported to Danbury

Hospital, Samuels was pronounced dead at 7:35 am.
