Jamie Ryan Sets A New Swim Record
For 11 years, Cathy Carney owned a prominent position - six prominent
positions, actually - on the Newtown High School girls' swimming record board
since she graduated in 1984.
Until Jamie Ryan arrived.
Last year it was the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.89) that Ryan claimed as her
own and this year - just three days ago on the first day of October - it was
the 200-yard individual medley.
Ryan touched the wall at Lauralton Hall in Milford in 2:14.44, a nark which is
6/100ths of a second better than the one of 2:14.50 that Carney registered 12
years ago.
Carney, who owned the six school records as well as three pool records (which
no longer stand) still remains in four spots on the team board - the 200
freestyle (1:55.30), the 100 butterfly (1:00.24), the 100 freestyle (55.56)
and 500 freestyle (5:06.40) - but Ryan is close in the 200 free and 500 free.
The last pool record of the three which Carney owned, the 500 freestyle, was
shattered this year by almost three seconds when Jamie swam the event in
5:15.00. And on Friday, against Pomperaug, the sophomore will continue the
assault.
