Belle Epoque Auction At Doyle

NEW YORK CITY -- William Doyle Galleries' Belle Epoque auction on October 7

embraced Nineteenth and Twentieth Century decorative arts spanning the

prevailing tastes of the period, from Nineteenth Century Louis XV and Louis

XVI revival styles through early Twentieth Century designs.

Highlighting the Nineteenth Century French furniture was an elegant Louis XV

style gilt-bronze mounted mahogany commode with a demilune marble top that

realized $23,000, and a pair of Louis XIV style gilt-bronze mounted ebonized

encoignures each mounted with reliefs of classical maidens and further brass

inlay at $9,775.

A late Nineteenth Century Italian Renaissance style ebonized cabinet with a

figure of Athena in the center niche and floral pietra dura panels adorning

the drawers attained $8,625.

$8,625 was paid for an Eastlake walnut and burlwood bedroom suite and $8,625

for a Georgian style painted wood bedroom suite, each piece painted with

floral swags and figural motifs. Also sought-after was a Hungarian ash

dressing table with mirror and washstand en suite, $8,625. A Victorian

foliate-carved mahogany bar with a stained glass canopy sold for $8,050.

Outstanding among the fine decorative objects was a pair of gilt-bronze and

cut glass large ten-light chandelier with multiple tiers of large pear-shaped

prisms for $31,625.

Lighting highlights include a pair of Empire style gilt and patinated-bronze

and marble seven-light candelabra, each in the form of a winged classical

maiden, for $13,800, and a set of gilt carved wood two-light sconces each

cartouche-shaped standard suspended from a ribbon bow with cornucopia-shaped

candle arms, $11,500.

Two Theodore Deck pottery plaques decorated by Ernest Carrier, one depicting

two exotic birds at the water's edge for $20,700 and another picturing a

mallard in flight, $16,100.

Aesthetic appeal and high quality contributed to the $24,150 generated for a

Georg Jensen sterling silver center bowl with hanging grape cluster ornaments

adorning the pulled corners. Eighteen American sterling silver service plates,

each with a scrolling edge and floral repousse along the borders, brought

$8,050.

Gilt-bronze mounted Sevres porcelain covered vases included one urn painted by

H. Desprez with Eighteenth Century battle scenes, $14,950, and $9,775 for

another decorated with Venus and Cupid. Another Sevres piece was a gilt-bronze

and onyx mounted porcelain pedestal painted with figural and landscape for

$8,050. Porcelain collectors favored a large Meissen porcelain dinner service

in the Blue Onion pattern, $8,625.

Two carved marble sculptures included a young girl scolding her cat, entitled

"Reproof," that doubled the pre-sale estimate at $13,800, and Ferdinando

Vichi's marble figural group of a woman seated on an upholstered chair playing

with her child, $11,500.

Competition between determined bidders resulted in $21,850 for a Steinway &

Sons piano with a Rococo style mahogany case.
