Through Newtown High School's 35-year history in the WCC, no basketball player

was ever more dominant than 1982 graduate Randy Gunther.

The only NHS basketball player ever to be named first team All-State, the 6-6

Gunther starred in the Indians' front court for three seasons and guided the

team to two Western Connecticut Conference Championships - being named MVP in

both. Gunther finished his NHS basketball career second on the school's

all-time scoring list and is one of only two NHS players to score over 1,000

points (1,137).

He also left Newtown as the school's all-time leading rebounder, clearing the

500-rebound mark in his junior year.

His long list of accolades includes being named High School All-American

honorable mention in Street & Smith's basketball poll.
