Christina Maturi has been named "1996 Young Careerist" by the Newtown Business
and Professional Women's Club. The annual award recognizes young successful
women in Newtown.
Ms Maturi was chosen for her involvement in her family's business, Newtown
Florist, and her other community activities.
Ms Maturi, 23, is a floral designer, salesperson and marketing manager and
consultant for Newtown Florist, her family's business since 1988. She joined
the business in May 1994 after graduating from Loyola University in Chicago
with a bachelor's degree in communications.
An active member of the Newtown Chamber of Commerce, she also has worked with
the Family Life Center, Women in Newtown, the Economic Development Commission,
the Senior Center, Newtown Montessori and the Girl Scouts.
Ms Maturi said she aspires to become a highly recognized floral designer and a
newspaper columnist who writes about flowers.
In the past year and a half she has increased Newtown Florist's corporate and
wedding work significantly. The business has taken an aggressive position in
the local market as a highly successful full-service florist.
A talented photographer who earned a certificate from the photography school
at Rochester Institute of Technology, Ms Maturi has won an award in the
Society for the Creative Arts in Newtown (SCAN) competition. She also won an
award for her sales results while working as a sales executive for an
automobile dealership in the Chicago area.
Ms Maturi will represent Newtown BPW in the district-level Young Careerist
competition, which will be held in Bethel next month. The winner of this event
will travel to Hartford to compete at the state level.
