Pat Walsh, business teacher at Newtown High School, has announced that the

school's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter recently won third

place honors as one of the most outstanding chapters in the state.

At the recent State Leadership Conference, several FBLA members won

prestigious awards. Ms Walsh said Monday that their efforts have truly

revitalized the Newtown chapter.

"These kids have put us back on the map," Ms Walsh said.

At the conference, Peter Van Oy placed first in the Computer Applications

competitive event, the team of Maureen Pekar and Alexandra Zaleta placed

fourth in the Desktop Publishing event, Brian Byrne received Who's Who in FBLA

recognition and Krista Reichert was elected to serve as the state FBLA Vice

President for the 1997/98 school year.

Ms Walsh said Peter and Krista are now eligible to attend the FBLA National

Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 28-July 4.

"They will represent our town and the state of Connecticut in national

competition and will undergo intense leadership training there," Ms Walsh

said.

Other students who contributed to the Newtown FBLA chapter this year were

Melissa Grossman, who prepared the annual scrapbook, and Steve Platt, who won

third place for his annual activities report.
