SNAPSHOT :MARILYN PLACE
Occupation: Director of Senior Center for the Town of Newtown.
How long in Newtown: 13 years.
Biggest change in town: The growth of the population in the school system. And
elderly needs.
Family: Married to a wonderful husband - Robert. He's a saint - he's got to be
to be married to me! We have a 20-year-old, Rob, and Timothy, 16, who's a
junior at the high school.
Pets: Smokey, the cat from hell. She's beautiful; you'll go to pet her and
she'll eat you. She's vicious.
Organizations/clubs: Connecticut Association of Senior Center Personnel, and
Babe Ruth because the kids are always in baseball.
Hobbies: Everything. Painting - reverse glass, a 16th Century art where you
work with opaque and transparent oils as a medium, sewing, making bird houses
with my husband, taking walks, reading a good book, and gardening. We have an
herb and vegetable garden. We don't can, we freeze. And my husband built a hot
house so we have lettuce all year 'round. There's nothing like fresh salad
every day. And the turnips are still in the ground.
Favorite books: Mysteries. I love mysteries. Right now I'm reading Remember Me
by Mary Higgins Clark.
Places you walk: My husband and I just get in the car and go. Sometimes we go
to Treadwell Park. Usually, after dinner, we walk in the neighborhood. It's so
peaceful, you can look at the stars, there's no traffic. It's quality time. We
catch up... We look forward to that.
Favorite food: "See" food. Actually, whatever my husband cooks for dinner.
He's a fabulous cook, very creative with what he makes.
Personal philosophy: Have lots of patience, listen to people, never think you
know it all because you can always learn something from other people, share
your opinion - not give it. Every day you learn; you can never learn enough.
