with cut: Dinner Dance To Benefit Newtown Fund

The Newtown Police Union, Local 3513, American Federation of State, County and

Municipal Employees (AFSCME) will sponsor a dinner dance on Saturday, January

25, at The Fireside Inn to benefit the private charity The Newtown Fund.

The 17-piece Berkshire Big Band will perform. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. A

buffet dinner will be served from 7 to 8:30 pm, and dancing will take place

from 8:30 to 11:30 pm. A cash bar will be available.

Tickets to the event cost $30 per person and are available at the police

station, 3 Main Street, or by contacting George Mattegat at 203-426-3228.

Tickets also are available at Newtown Pharmacy, 34 Church Hill Road, and at

the Stockwell Bates & Co accounting firm at 30 Church Hill Road.

A snow date will be announced.

The Newtown Fund is a community charity which is funded through private

donations, explained Sandra Stockwell, the group's treasurer. The organization

provides help to people beyond what's available through the town's social

services department.

The money which The Newtown Fund obtains from the dinner dance will be placed

in the group's Perpetual Fund, said Ms Stockwell. Money in that fund is used

for purposes such as providing medical equipment and resourses to persons

trying to cope with catastrophic illnesses and aiding people whose houses have

burned, among other uses.

The Newtown Fund provides a range of services, including financial help to

people who have lost their jobs, Ms Stockwell said.

Most people who receive help from the fund have been screened by the town's

social services department or other agencies, according to Ms Stockwell.
