Glorydays - May 10, 1996
This week in 1991
Nine-year-old Peter Zingoni, of Newtown, was a winner at the Hartford Whalers/
Coca-Cola Future Stars Competition and was honored at the Hartford Civic
Center during the first-period intermission of a Whalers/ Boston Bruins
playoff game. The Future Stars competition had taken place in Avon, where the
state's outstanding hockey players, age 7-13, were judged on their overall
hockey skills.
This week in 1986
The Newtown High boys' tennis team, under coach Gary McMahon, evened its
record at 3-3 with a pair of wins over Abbott Tech and Joel Barlow. Coach
McMahon gave his top singles players the day off against Tech where Newtown
won 7-0 behind victories by Ken Washburn, Steve Bigham, Carlos Perez, and
Chris Gardner in singles and the teams of Peter Kaye and Paul Steiner and Ben
Correia and Cheryl Tomanio in doubles. In a 5-2 win over Barlow the Indians
got singles victories from its usual lineup of Jim Craven, Kris Svensson, and
Bigham. Toby Cox and Mike Testani won in first doubles while Matt Spengler and
Ed Rafferty won in second doubles.
This week in 1981
Newtown High freshman Kim DeCarlo pitched the first no-hitter of her high
school career in zipping New Milford, 9-0. DeCarlo also smacked a triple and
an RBI single to aid her own cause. Sophomore sensation Jacquie Smith also
continued her torrid hitting pace with another multiple hit game. Laura
Gollinghorst also had a pair of hits in the win for the 7-5 Lady Indians.
This week in 1976
The Newtown High boys' track team whipped up on Bethel by a 104-41 margin as
Chris Wertz and Dave Bolmer were both double winners. Wertz copped first place
in the high jump and triple jump while Bolmer won the shot put and discus.
Also garnering first-place points at the meet for the Indians were Mike Whelan
(220), Tony Reelick (440), Steve Gallo (100), Mike Wertz (long jump), Pete
Neilson (pole vault), and Peter Ertl (javelin).
This week in 1971
Rain washed away the week's sports slate at NHS, but that didn't keep the
school's undefeated softball team off the practice field. In running out to an
impressive 10-0 start, the NHS girls have been feasting on the opposition, via
the long ball. To date, Rita Kovacs leas the team with three home runs, Pam
Skelton has two, and Mary Kennedy and Debby Lajoie both have one. The team's
latest three victims have been Brookfield, Joel Barlow, and New Milford who
were disposed of by scores of 29-8, 28-2, and 12-11. Newtown's unbeaten squad
is rounded out by Nancy Morgan, Sandy Martin, Jerry Schada, Sara Freeman, Pat
Farrell, and Holly Kormonik.
This week in 1966
Spike Alberts, softball manager of the Plastic Molding Company, was appointed
manager of the Connecticut Travelers Charity Softball team. The team will make
a western tour in July and play six charity events. Local team members
included Ed Mulford, Jay Carle, Jeff Griffin, and Ed Board. The team will open
on June 4 with a double header on Long Island. The first game is a fast-pitch
game and the second, slo-pitch.
This week in 1961
The SAC Mighty Midget bseball team had its team photo appear on Page 7 of The
Newtown Bee as they opened their new season against the St Rose School.
Pictured in the photo for the Sackers were Dan Randall, Jack Randall, Chuck
Tani, Charlie Randall, Ed Doherty, Sid Watkins, Steve Watkins, Stan Siebert,
Tim Powell, Bill Halstead, Art Crouch, Hal Lockwood, Joe Tani, Fred Crouch,
Don Casey, Bill Tuttle, Art Weile, T Presnell, J Rohleder, J McLaren, and J
Senior. Powell went 3-for-3 in the game and Casey was 2-for-2, but SAC lost
the season opener, 9-4.
