Selectmen Set Alarm Fees
In response to the recent creation of an alarm ordinance, the Board of
Selectmen Monday set fees for alarm users and fines for false alarms.
The selectmen set a $15 one-time registration fee for all alarm owners. The
fee has drawn the criticism of alarm owners, who say the registration fee is
essentially a tax.
The money is to be used to cover the cost of teaching homeowners how to avoid
false alarms.
The Board of Selectmen also set a $30 penalty to be levied against any
homeowner who has more than three false alarms responded to by police.
Officers respond to an average of six false alarms per day.
The large number of false alarms prompted the Legislative Council's Ordinance
Committee to write the ordinance.
