NHS graduation Set June 20

Newtown High School seniors, the class of 1996, will receive their diplomas

Thursday night, June 20.

The Board of Education approved the graduation date Tuesday night.

The school board approved several other recommendations by Superintendent of

Schools John R. Reed at its regular meeting.

The board gave its OK on a request from the Newtown High School band for a

trip to the 1996 Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida this December.

It also approved NHS Latin teacher Diane Olbry's request to inform students

about a trip she is planning to Greece in April, 1997. The approval was made

with the understanding that the Board of Education will be named insured on

the insurance policy.

The board endorsed the district's K-12 science philosophy and goals.

NHS English teacher Kathy Swift's application for a journalism book ( High

School Journalism ) for her journalism class was approved as were two K-5

mathematics textbooks ( Everyday Mathematics and Mimosa ).

Board members also approved personnel requests from Chrissie Pierce and Mary

Morton, both seeking leave for the 1996-97 school year for child rearing

purposes. The leaves will be without pay or benefits.
