Hawley School For Town Offices? Rosenthal Says Forget It, But Mahoney Can't
Board of Education Chairman Herb Rosenthal has taken exception to a local
board's consideration of Hawley School as an option for future office space
for the town.
At a Novemember 26 meeting of the Municipal Space Needs Advisory Committee,
members drew up a list of sites that could be considered for the town's next
town hall. Member Joe Mahoney, brainstorming for ideas, suggested Hawley
School, saying another elementary school will likely need to be built in the
next five years.
In a letter to committee chairman Jim Mooney, Mr Rosenthal stated that there
are no plans to build another elementary school and that Mr Mooney should
contact Superintendent of Schools John R. Reed or himself before speculating
about plans for an existing school building or the construction of new ones.
"Let me make it clear to you and your committee that the Board of Education
has no plan to discontinue using Hawley School," Mr Rosenthal wrote.
At Tuesday night's meeting of the Municipal Space Needs Advisory Board, Mr
Mooney suggested dropping Hawley School from the list of options, but Mr
Mahoney disagreed, saying it should be kept on the table.
"I don't think that just because John Reed and Herb Rosenthal wrote a letter
saying this is what they perceive the future of Newtown being means we have to
agree with that," he said.
Mr Mahoney added that the space needs committee is looking at things much
further down the road than the Board of Education and that Hawley School could
indeed be an option by the year 2020.
Hawley School remains a viable option as a future site for town office space.
