Home Repair Pros Sought For Homefront Day
NEW CANAAN - AmeriCares is searching for professional tradesmen to lead
volunteer crews who will repair homes in Western Connecticut and eastern New
York on HomeFront Day in May.
Since 1988, on the first Saturday in May, AmeriCares Homefront has spruced up
848 homes of people who are physically or financially able to make repairs
themselves. More than 200 sponsors and 8,500 volunteers have been recruited
annually to accomplish the necessary renovations at no charge to the
homeowner.
AmeriCares Homefront needs roofers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, power
washers, painters and other professional tradesmen to lead teams of volunteers
working on the projects.
On May 3 - HomeFront Day - AmeriCares HomeFront plans to renovate
approximately 165 homes and community centers in Fairfield, New Haven and
Hartford counties and in Westchester and Putnam counties in New York.
Each year local residents, homeowners, churches and social service
organizations call AmeriCares on a confidential basis with the names of
homeowners in need. Interviews with homeowners eligible for aid are conducted
from September through January to determine what work will be done.
HomeFront is a division of the non-profit, humanitarian relief organization
AmeriCares Foundation, which was founded by Robert C. Macauley in 1982 in New
Canaan. With operating overhead of 1.2 percent, AmeriCares is considered one
of the most cost-effective charities in the United States. It responds to
emergency needs and supports long-term health care and service programs in the
United States and 94 other countries.
Those interested in volunteering on HomeFront Day are urged to contact
AmeriCares Homefront at 1-800-887-HOPE (4673).
